CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ryan (George Clooney) tells Natalie (Anna Kendrick) about his goal of earning 10 million frequent flyer miles.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Jason Reitman's adaptation of the novel Up in the Air tells the story of Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), who makes his living personally handing out pink slips -- he's the top hatchet man at a company that other companies hire when they are downsizing. And since business is booming, his job keeps him on the go constantly. He flies all across the country, staying in a series of nice hotels. And although this itinerant lifestyle prevents him from having any kind of stable, regular life, this doesn't bother him in the slightest -- he's thrilled to be a boy in a traveling bubble. During one particular layover, he strikes up a conversation with Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga), a fellow savvy traveler. They bond over the ins and outs of various airlines and hotels, and quickly fall into bed. By morning, they are figuring out when their schedules will allow them to meet up again, even though they both make it clear that there are no strings attached. When Ryan arrives back in the home office, he meets no-nonsense career-oriented twentysomething Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick), a fast-rising up-and-comer who wants to change the company's practices and save millions by having the staff fire people remotely via webcams. Furious at the thought of losing a lifestyle he's grown quite comfortable with, he convinces his boss (Jason Bateman) to let him take Natalie on a few trips so that she can learn what it's really like to fire someone. Melanie Lynskey, Danny McBride, and J.K. Simmons co-star in this Best Picture Academy Award nominee.

This film was amazing. Particularly how they put two people together who work in complete opposite positions in their life.

The writing on this film is just fantastic.

He's banking on the idea that the airline he has all those miles with won't suddenly go belly up or change their policies and undo everything he's worked for over the years, the same way all the people he fires had put their trust into their big company to reward their years of loyalty and hard work. They all thought the company would take care of them and their work would amount to something tangible. Instead he's hoping for his name on the side of a plane that nobody will ever read or care about and will probably be erased in a year or two

this philosophy is strikingly similar to xbox achievements.

You know what I like about Clooney? He just fits everything he's in. If the material is even passable, he's great. He's an absolute rock of an actor.

Y'all are laughing at him, but none of you have experienced buying a long haul Premium Economy fare on British Airways and after everyone has boarded, the flight attendant walks up to you with a glass of champagne and says "I have great news Mr C, we had a last minute cancellation in Club World so we can accommodate you" and you walk up front. Gold Status.

Many, many (many) years ago, I did some HORRENDOUS travelling in my job. After leaving the military on a high note backed by two university degrees and a stint in Special Forces, I quickly transitioned into an amazing role for a multinational arms dealer.
I was similar to George Clooney's character however, I wasn't quite at that number of miles....not quite.
Saying that though, I was at the highest tier level on all my travel service providers (airlines, hotels, hire cars etc). I would be regularly upgraded at a whim with no questions asked. I dressed in suits and took pride in my travelling style and appearance.
I knew most of the travel industry staff across many cities by first name and would regularly buy them Christmas and birthday gifts and souvenirs from foreign shores as thank-you presents for their service and support.

For personal travel, the staff would automatically upgrade me to the best suites at reduced rates, although I tried not to travel on my time off.

I remember the looks I would get from other travellers as I would skip queue's, have priority seating and get the nicest of hire cars. I was even at the point where several hotels took my photo and had it laminated at the front desk counter so that new staff would know my name and know which room I was to be checked into.
What people didn't see was the sheer slog it took on a monthly basis to maintain such a rarified status.
As the saying goes,
"The grass is greener on the other side, but what is the water bill like?"

On the surface things looked great, mid to late 30s, awesome high paying career, bordering on Tony Stark levels of military equipment, jet-setting around the world and enjoying the finer things in my home life was suffering. My wife was in the first trimester with our second child and I was sometimes only home on the weekend....if I was in country that is.

Anyway, I had a silver bullet moment when one one particular day each of the staff from airline to hire car to hotel asked by name how my wife's pregnancy was going. I hadn't thought about my wife for well over a week due to my current project worth millions. These "strangers" knew more about my home life than I did.
I realised that everything I thought I was working for was in danger of being lost....and it was totally my fault.

I decided then and there that my family was more important. I quit my job at the end of the one month notice period and changed industries. I thought I would regret it.

Once our second child was born I took my family on holidays to where my wife always wanted to go and I burnt through 3/4 of my miles in a few weeks. The remainder I gifted to my brother, the travel admin staff at my old work and my 50yo neighbours who had been unofficially supporting my wife while I was away.

I started in a new role with zero travel. It was a bit of a paycut but I was home every night. My wife was happy and with a new baby, it was the antidote I needed for the gnawing hole inside me.

When this movie came out, it was a bit of nostalgia. It really hit me....

Just the other day I took my first flight for work in over five years...stuck down the back in cattle class in-between two grumpy travellers. I had the biggest smile on my face as the flight attendant ignored me and my companions bitched about how good it would be at the front of the plane.

Safe travels

Keep in mind he must have 9 million 900 thousand something miles by now in the movie, and knows that in the next couple of flights he would hit his target.

“If I had that many miles, I would go to an airport, pick a destination and go”

“And that’s why no one will remember your name”

I rewatch this scene whenever I’m having trouble picking a flight. It’s amazing that we get to fly. We’ve made an insane chore of it, but at its heart it’s an unbelievable gift.

great film. WAtching it again as I am older, it just showcases so much more colour in the differences between two individuals lives.

Only thing wrong with this scene is that he says his goal is 10million miles. However most airlines will only give status for actual miles flown, not for buying lunch/dinner etc. You still get miles for buying food etc, but they don't count towards status miles (which is what he was aiming for in the movie).

to be fair to be in a club more exlusively than the number of people whove been on the moon is a pretty cool goal

I don’t know why I love Anna’s delivery of “…I’m dying to know” I can’t tell if she’s being genuine or sarcastic… or both.

I am this guy. I fly more than I’m at home. I so love it. I feel odd if I wake up at home. Enjoying life to its limits. No chains. I’m blessed.
