I like Cliff, I love his passion and agree with much of his theology, but this substitutionary atonement idea is a very late development, codified by Anselem of Canterbury in the 11th Century. The Apostles and the early fathers and the Orthodox Church today has always believed that Christ went to the cross voluntarily in the Supreme Act of love and humility to conquer death. He died for our sins because sins cause death. He conquered Satan because Satan causes death. This wrath of God and punishment of Christ is late western Christianity and not the early Church's teaching. Sin is not a crime that must be punished. Read the Fathers. Sin is an illness that needs to be healed. Christ is the physician and the Church is the hospital.

Christ came in human form in order to gain entrance into Hades a destroy the power that Death had over all mankind. Before Christ was incarnate all humans went to Hades after death, including the prophets and righteous people. That is why the hymn of the resurrection that is sung on Pascha (Easter) is "Christ is Risen from the dead trampling down death by death and upon those in the tombs bestowing life." He also came to be an example for us human on how to become like Him. He was also the fulfullment of all of the prophecies in the Old Testament. He did not come because God the Father had some kind of score to settle with humans. God does not have human emotions He is pure love.

So we're just pretending that eternal torment and suffering is the reasonable(just) penalty for committing the horrendous "crime" of being born into a fallen world through no fault your own? How on earth is that justice? Not even Hitler deserves that.
And why are we pretending that God _has to_ send the vast majority of people who have ever lived to hell? As if he has no other option. As if he doesn't want to send these people to hell, but he's forced to because of the justice system he himself created(and has changed at least once already, by sending his son to be tortured and killed as a scapegoat(because apparently only a human sacrifice will appease his wrath.))
