Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday it was vital to avoid any kind of military confrontation between nuclear powers, even if it only involved conventional weapons, the TASS news agency reported. Lavrov also said the West was pushing Ukraine to continue fighting against Russia.

Putin has not issued any veiled threats of using nuclear weapons and nobody should suggest that he has. However, Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states ie Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia all have called for nuclear weapons. In addition the US has discussed the option of a limited nuclear first strike. Russia remains the only adult in the room.

Putin didn’t issue a veiled threat about nuclear weapons. What he said is that others have made veiled nuclear threats against Russia. He reminded them that he has nuclear weapons too and will use them if attacked with nuclear weapons. If nuclear powers get into a conflict, then it obviously increases the potential for an escalation to a nuclear exchange. Everybody knows this and has said it for decades but it’s “chilling” if Putin says it. And none of this has anything to do with Ukraine since Ukraine is not a nuclear power and Russia could crush it like an empty beer can just using conventional weapons.
