Fixing Kalos' Gym Leaders

In today's video we take a look at Pokemon X and Y's Gym Leaders! Many people have requested these games for my next "fixing" video and I can see why. These Gym Leaders are some of the most underlevelled and underdeveloped ones out there, so many of them don't even use Pokemon with 4 moves! So sit down and relax as we go through their teams one by one, pointing out the good and the bad, and theorycrafting how to make them a challenge (difficulty scaled to a hypothetical hard mode if that was a thing that existed outside of gen 5).

👋Hey everyone, thanks for checking out my video!
☀I just wanted to clarify that the difficulty we're aiming for here is a hypothetical "hard mode", something Pokemon lacks but is a feature I would love to see in the mainline games in the future.
💬Feel free to comment your own team ideas for the Gym Leaders, there's no one right way to do this, so be as creative as you like!

The Kalos gyms were so strange overall. This gen definitely needs a revamp the most

It feels like when they were making X and Y, they looked at the first few gens, and were like, "Oh wait, we're marketing this towards young children" and then proceeded to make all the gyms a cakewalk

I always found it weird how Korrina has such a huge focus on Lucario yet she doesn’t use hers in her gym battle.

I'm sure it wasn't GameFreak's intention to imply it, but Clemont having Grass Knot on his Heliolisk immediately made me think "Dang, Ramos is so easy that even Clemont went to get a Plant Badge."

Not the Flying + Levitate + Air Balloon Rotom 😭

You didn't set aside time to brag about it in the video (humble of you) but I like that Wulfric's choice of teammates is not just mechanically good but relevant to the region setting, story, and his personal tastes as a trainer:
-Lapras (gift Lapras given after Korrina's gym, so must be common/traditional in Kalos)
-Weavile (blue and red like Wulfric's theming)
-Mamoswine (ride pokemon used to traverse deep snow in his area)
-Avalugg & Mega Abomasnow (the ice dungeon in the previous town filled w/ them and featuring the latter)

All this to say, your attention to detail didn't go unnoticed. Great vid!

Since they need to use Work Up in order to use Last Resort, that 327.6 base power move is boosted even further!

Watching the XY Anime then looking at the games, the Gyms leaders are really quite powerful in the Anime, Ice Beam on Surskit, and Draco Meteor on Tyrunt is insane.

7:55 Nah, I hate this. Grant has a nice theme of having both fossils be his only team members at the same level. Which is probably one of the first we have seen in the whole franchise. I would definitely keep it that way, just buff them up. It would be also funny to see this be a double battle (we never get those early on for Gym Leaders). With the theme they picked for the Gym, I think it would also be justifiable to give one of them Air Balloon or maybe even both of them.

I loved X and Y, but it was cartoonishly easy, love the idea of Pokemon games requiring at least a little skill 😂

for grant, i think itd be more in line to give him an anorith instead of dwebble, as theyre basically the same pokemon thanks to similar stats and learnsets, but anorith is a fossil so it goes along with the other two
im not sure if you can get anorith in XY tho

Something I feel later gens fail to do is have TMs that are *unique* to their generation, and are incorporated into the gym leader's team. I think Hoenn did that the best - the only repeat TM is Thunderbolt, which you could easily replace it with Shock Wave. If there are no new or worthwhile moves of the gym's respective type introduced in said generation, maybe reconsider if that type should be used for a gym.

I hate to see incomplete movesets so I recommend giving surskit mudslap and Vivillon gust or draining kiss.

It's such a breath of fresh air to see the Kalos leaders be powerful! Your sets were really well-done & creative, and amazing editing & humor as always :)

Im only at the grass gym but i appricate the details youre putting in with offering in lore reasons for gogoat only knowing 3 moves, or the leader's garden being full of Floettes.
Its very sweet! You got yourself a new subscriber

Personally i think we should replace ledyba with a kakuna because out of all the bug megas i think mega beedril fits the best for vioalla so for the rematch she has a mega beedrill

Fling + Poison Barb is such a fun gimmick, there's so much attention put into Fling mechanics I'm surprised no trainers in-game make use of them

Tbf when Unova did E4 only 4 they were actually a challenge. Bisharp and Kroookodile, Jellecent and Chandelure, Meinshou and Conkelder as well as Sygilith and the wierd jelly cell (cant remember its name) all built a really great offense/defense with all the rest filling something. Heck evej Grimsly's Liepard was some form of a threat for a route 2 dark type
