Baofeng UV-5 & UV-3 antenna analysis and comparison

The conclusion is that in VHF both antennas perform very well, with SWR close to1:1. In UHF, the performances are really bad, with SWR greater than 4:1.
UV-5 is better than UV-3 in terms of SWR, due to longer antenna, I guess.
So, now that I know, I will go buy an new, better, bigger antenna for my UV-5.

I have uv5riii model and using the surecom sw33 swr meter I got an swr of 19.9. Same test with Nagoya 771antenna was 19.9. I put a 1.5 m counterpoise and when testing I was sitting down and the counterpoise was touching the concrete. I got swr of 9.5 and fluctuating lower. My counterpoise on the rats tail end was not bare wire. Yet it lowered the the ratio. Can I modify antenna or just put an 2 meter counterpoise? The 1.5 m version worked roughly 2 times better. I have set up a uniden whip antenna with coaxial cable and sma connector to baofeng uv5r iii. When tested swr, I got down 1:1 . Any reply appreciated cheers from Australia 🙂👍👍👍

I guess I was right to change my Antenna out with a Diamond SRJ77CA :)
