86 is the number for Chick Hicks, and it foreshadows his tendencies to force people out of the race since removing someone or something from anything can also be called 86-ing.

Ngl when I was a kid, I thought the 86 on chick hicks was because 43+43=86

Fun fact: the train scene was not in the original movie, and was added at request of Operation Lifesaver to be part of a safety campaign. Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit organization created by the Union Pacific to help promote and educate railroad safety. Many of their campaigns often discuss the biggest threats around trains and their tracks, and telling people about what people shouldn't do near them. One of those is racing a train to a crossing, which often results in fatal car-train collisions. Had lightning McQueen gone a bit slower or responded a second late, he likely would've joined the other 200 individuals who died in a crossing accident and the 1000 killed every year by trains

Pixar was founded in 1986. That's where Hicks gets his #.

Also, 43 was the number of the car that Richard Petty drove in 1968 through (as far as I know) 1974. Richard Petty also voiced Strip Weathers in cars and his nickname was "The King". An obvious reference to his driving skills.
