What about sentimental items? This is when decluttering can get difficult because emotions are involved. Here are a few options, and, as always, trust your gut.

When I decluttered my life and home it all came bubbling to the surface. I was missing out on so much!

I made a rule for myself, I will keep 3 sentimental things from my each of parents, 2 from each grandparent, and 1 from great grandparents. It gives me the ability to keep items that somehow represent the relationship I had with that person, without feeling like I need to keep everything they ever owned. If I already have my number of things and something else from them becomes available I have to choose which item I would rather keep. Ex. I wore my mom's veil in my wedding so I will keep that. I share a birthday with my grandmother and she passed down a ring with our birthstone. My father and I bonded over our interest in architecture and he gave me his drafting tools. It's how I've been able to keep sentimental items but have a limit so that it doesn't get out of hand.

I'd say usually items are sentimental because the person is no longer with us or they live so far away you can't go grab coffee.

If you choose to keep the item then it has to be maintained otherwise you really aren't honoring that relationship. Find a place to display and/or use the item and don't just keep it stored away somewhere.

Hard to follow when the sentimental items connect you with loved but already lost ones. Just mentioning. I still regret that I did not keep more from my parents who passed away long ago..
