Over a lifetime the drop out rate of running is nearly 100% - but it doesn't have to be like that for you

Running is not actually an action, it is a mindset. And if you commit, ebery day, to being better, that WILL include running. And when you can't run. You're still a runner. So here's the steps I'm taking to get to the place where I am in the 1% that will NEVER quit until my life is over.

Lying on the bed, tired, with sore muscles, 12th week of marathon training, need to board the plane at 6am for work... Need to do my easy 40min run and I do not want to. But I will! Because I'm a runner.

This winter is so challenging for me. I've been stuck with very bad flus twice, had an angry sciatic nerve for weeks, and the temperatures are triggering my tachycardia more than is "normal" for me. I've now accepted that winter is not my time, so I run when I can, as much as I can, and hope for better days. I need to run. Oh, and the runs I CAN do, I make sure to enjoy. I run in beautiful places, I stop to smell the roses, I talk to the ravens... it's my time. 🤷🏻‍♀️💙

You just motivated a 66 year old runner to go out and run on New Year morning! Good video. I am the 1%! Happy New Year everyone. Now get out there and run.

If I am not in the mood to run I put my running gear on and after that I will go and feel good - I am a runner. Stress at work or some aggressive feelings is gone after a run - I am a runner. Last year my mum died - felt better after running - I am a runner. You have to decide if you want to be one by yourself not by anyones proposal. Running gives me lots of freedom and resilience and I run slow.

Wow, I love this video. Really insightful narrative that casts endurance running as it really is, a commitment to discipline in the interest of being better. The visual of Mary steadily grinding out miles perfectly captures the essence of endurance training. And I loved the comment regarding the 90 year old runner as I’m a 73 year old marathoner and triathlete and I’ve begun to wonder how it’s going to end, but maybe I don’t need to worry about that too much for now.

I'm determined to be that 1%. At 41, I have another solid 41 years of running ahead of me. I want to run till I physically anymore cannot. Zero substances except for coffee, super healthy life, home cooked food 95% of the time and with the occasional junk and sugar bombs to spice up life. That's the recepy for happiness and good health and performance at work and with friends and family. Running is the center of this ideology because the said habits are needed to keep running in an enjoyable way, and in turn the running itself results into the benefits I mentioned.

This is fantastic. This hits right up there with my favorite line from Billy Yang’s documentary, The Why: “When it’s your time, do you want to leave a well-preserved body, or do you really want to use it? A body with stories that says you’ve pushed it, and at times suffered, and you sought its potential.”

Another excellent video. I do not comment much of the time, but I want you to know that every Sunday, I look forward to your post. You fill a niche that I find nowhere else, which is more related to the spiritual side of running, and how it intersects with how we define our existence. Than you and Mary for inspiring us!

This is a brilliant video. Running is a big part of who I am now and I hope I can keep doing it for the rest of my life. Part of formulating my goals for the new year involves trying to apply my running mindset to other things I want to accomplish.

Happy New Year! Thanks for the inspiring starter. Been injured for a while now and really struggling with this. Once you know you're a runner the hardest thing not to be able to do is to run. Hopefully 2023 will be the year where I can solve the puzzle. cheers to the 1%, hope you have many great running related adventures in 2023!

I made running non-negotiable part of my daily routine. Just like a good night of sleep. Other than a serious family emergency, everybody knows it just makes no sense to try to talk me out of my morning run. And I made myself ready to run in every weather, place and conditions. I run every mornin, first thing. This is so that the habit sticks. I don’t leave myself a choice in whether I do it, only what kind of run it is going to be and what I will be listening to.
I got two days off for covid. I take a day off if my knee hurts which is a problem I live with, but I do it so that I can continue running.
