Many high salaried layoffs and these people will not find comparable paying jobs. You are right about cruises. A luxury hotel like the Montage in Laguna Beach is ~1100/night. Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur in at least 2000/night for most rooms. No food. You can go on a high end cruise for less with gourmet meals and drinks included. Also shore excursions included.
