He did say "eat my flesh, drink my blood;" but he could not have been talking literally. The symbolism is evident; He is the Word made flesh, and His word is bread indeed. Had He been speaking literally of His flesh, what was to prevent Him carving off a hunk of bicep and passing it around? It's obvious that they couldn't take the symbolism, just as Nicodemus couldn't initially understand being "born again." Literally, climbing back into my mother's womb? No!
