Many espresso drinks call for steamed milk, frothed milk, or some combination of both. To create rich, creamy lattes, cappuccinos and more, a good milk frother or steaming wand is essential. These metal devices attach to the espresso machine itself, allowing you to prepare cream or milk for use in your favorite espresso drinks. Discover how to froth milk with a KitchenAid® Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine and KitchenAid® Automatic Milk Frother Attachment.

How to Steam Milk with the Steam Wand

1. Using your KitchenAid® Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine, simply press until your steam wand snaps into place, and prepare to steam.

2. Fill the metal milk pitcher with your desired amount of cold milk.

3. Submerge the tip of the steam wand just slightly below the surface of milk in the milk pitcher, then start the steam.

4. Angle the pitcher until it creates a vortex, which mixes the milk onto itself. Wait for the steam to stop before removing the wand to avoid splatter.

How to Create Foam with the Milk Frother Attachment

You can also use a KitchenAid® Automatic Milk Frother Attachment to create creamy, silky foam at the touch of a button. Easier to use than traditional steam wands, the Automatic Milk Frother with Automatic Temperature Control ensures milk is steamed to your ideal temperature.

How to Make Latte Art

When you become more comfortable with the brewing process, you can add some flourish to your home brewing experience. Latte art has become a tradition because lattes contain a lot of steamed milk, which has the milky micro-bubbles that many creative baristas use to draw.

1. Hold your metal milk pitcher and cup each in a different hand and try to maintain a 90-degree angle between them as you pour.

2. Start by aiming at the center of the cup - a high slow pour to begin - eventually moving closer to the surface and going faster to finish.

3. Once the drink is about two-thirds or three-quarters full, change the angle of the spout to create a stream of micro-foam to draw more precise designs over top of your finished espresso!
