My 1st deck was oddly enough from the dollar tree. I was a teenager when I came across it. I absolutely loved it. My stepdad however got angry when he found out so I gave him a reading. His deck had the tower in it and the final card was the devil. Seeing this angered him so much he tore up every card in front of my face and forbid me from ever touching them again. Honestly the cards were right. He was a monster and his actions after that day only proved it further. The cards sacrificed themselves to warn me. That's how I choose to see it

Edit to add many misinterpret what I wrote but to reiterate the devil card can be read in many ways and hasany meanings. It doesn't make you a monster but can tell you that you may have toxic traits or addictions. It can also signal abuse. Don't believe me, look it up. This reading was done in 2010 and surprise surprise he abusive due to actions he partook in before and after the reading.

For those who have trouble connecting to the "standard" deck, I suggest reading the biography of Pamela Colman Smith (nicknamed Pixie), she was the original artist behind this deck, a storyteller, and an occultist. And while she painted the major arcana with Arthur Edward Waite's descriptions of symbolism in mind, the minor arcana is of her own vision. And, of course, she wasn't the best artist but she was quite compelling and had a good sense for symbolism.
I know people who developed quite an affection for this deck after reading about the author. The deck is something special and worth appreciation.

I wont buy anything that says “miss Cleo” on it. She was known to be a huge fraud. But yes, rider Waite is great. It was my first deck and I still use it for regular tarot readings.

I think it's safe to say that rider-waite decks are obviously great to start on for anyone. My top favourite to recommend for beginners that isn't a rider-waite, is the everyday witch tarot. It has beautiful imagery that is great to learn with. It follows the rider-waite model however artwork and connection with the deck are just as important; and there are people like me who don't like or don't connect to the rider-waite art style at all. The everday witch tarot is my favourite alternative and I always recommend it :) It's also my favourite to gift to young cousins and other people who might be taken aback by any nudity or gore on more classic decks.

I have several decks, BUT, when I’m doing deep studying I use Rider-Waite. You’re right, this deck is the foundation of all decks and where most books use as a reference. I enjoy your videos, nice down to earth information.

My first deck was shadowscapes tarot. Was really drawn to it and even though it looks different from a Rider-Waite I had no trouble learning with it. Recently got a Golden Art Nouveau deck and it is STUNNING. For those that don't know it is basically a Rider-Waite deck with a slightly different art style so if the traditional Rider-Waite doesn't speak to you I'd recommend checking it out. 💕
