If You Don't Stop Crying...(GenX Knows The Rest!)

Retro Rewind TV: GenX Is Not The Same!

😱One of the single most common phrases that I hear repeated by my fellow GenXers (and other 80s kids) is that their parents would say "If you don't stop crying, I'll give you something to cry about." Straight up, I've heard it from pretty much every 70s / 80s kid that I've ever talked to.

🤷🏻‍♂️That really seems to have been the universal mantra for the parents of GenX. I'm not sure if all the Silent Gen and Boomers who were parents all took the same class, or if they were given some sort of governmental-sponsored workshop, but they all said it.

🤣So, tell me, retro fans, which generation were you a part of? And don't whine to me and say "buuut I Millennials did that too." Because I'll give you something to whine about...👇

Yup. Crying and throwing a fit would guarantee you were NOT getting anything!

My kids are also getting the “if you don’t stop crying” treatment, but only when they are mad about not getting some stupid thing they want that they are not entitled to anyway. If they are genuinely sad we validate. It’s a good mix! Also, NO BRIBING!

I was a teenager at the store and this lady infront of me was letting her little boy scream and bite her and she just tried to act calm and she just smiled through it. Both and the check guy got stiff and felt fear for that kids but relaxed when nothing happened and joked about how what ways we would have been beat down. 😂😂❤

You had to add the mom grabbing your arm and digging her nails to the underside sensitive part of the arm too with a hissed I’ll give you something to cry about in a deadly low voice that’s said into your ear.. quite literally you shut up and you shut up quickly and stifled the sobs and let the tears fall silently if you couldn’t stop them, and you kept your head down or your butt was getting another dootadoo to your butt or the belt

Yup throwing a tantrum did nothing when I was growing up.Kinda sad considering grown ass adults throw tantrums when they see something they dont like and it gets instantly removed..NOT GOOD

I found this whole generation thing is sometimes completely wrong.

Say your grand parents were born in the 40’s, parents born in the 70’s, and you were born in the 2000’s. You’ll have more in common with some people in their 30’s than other kids your age.

Reason is many people’s grand parents were born in the 60’s, parents in the 80’s then born in the 2000’s.

How your parents were raised, then how they raise you, has more to play in how you grow up, than what decade you were born

I have fairly old parents, and have found myself with more in common with middle aged adults, especially in terms of world view, music, identity politics, and memories of childhood.

Some people are still raised old school, leaving us of out of sync with 2 generations

As a 15 year old I grew up with my mom saying “Ich geb dir gleich ein grund zum weinen“ which is German for I’m about to give you a reason to cry. She never meant it of course, but I was terrified.

Oh, yes, for sure... I use the same line on my children now. No way are you getting something for throwing a fit!!

Same. My Dad was Silent Generation. Ugh, that means the kids were supposed to be silent.

My mother’s favorite go to was the shoe until she was dressed up going out wearing long stiletto high heels. When I saw those pointy things heading for my butt I jumped out of the way which caused her to impale the high heel into her own calf. Needless to say the ole man came to her rescue with the belt for a long time. Everytime she howled he gave me another wack. Man was I happy they left for the hospital. The good ole days!
