Sam, the unboxed method is not just a manufacturing thing, it is enabled by the way the new vehicles will be architected. It has to do with things like steer by wire, break by wire, generic zonal controllers, 48 volt architecture, and other things. It is impossible to apply an unboxed manufacturing technique for the way legacy vehicles are architected even the legacy Tesla models.

I heard that one of the reasons that Chinese cars are cheaper is that they make assembly lines that are straight, they don't have curves and corners in them.

Considering Tesla employs about 3x more workers at Giga Berlin to build the same number of cars as competitor car plants, they need to do something radical to improve productivity.

At very least, today’s car manufacturers must have tried something like the unboxed method, probably many times. If so why did it not take ?

Moving assembly line methods with technology makes total sense, but many legacy car makers have continued to use wht they know. Tesla make cars cheaper by being innovative.

What does it matter, what Tesla will reveal. Roadster was announced about 5 years ago. Where is it ? The same applies to Semi. Announcements are aspirational, and easy production is real and hard, and this is where Tesla keeps on falling to deliver 😢

Tesla is VERY lucky to have the Shanghai plant, up and running in record time, producing 1M vehicles within 4 years of groundbreaking and with less staff and only a fraction of the $$$ spent to build giga Texas.

Americans love their cars Man. Even the ones who treat theirs like an armpit cat hair snow globe don’t like riding in someone else’s filthy car.

When these robo-taxis happen another “growth industry” will be keeping them clean. Imagine a taxi with no one in the car with you to keep all but the sketchiest humans from “marking’ their ride.

“Yes, I need a 2 week old unchanged litter box to take me to the store please. Also, I’ll pay extra for it to look and feel like a dystopian stainless steel range hood.”

I know we’re spoiled. But dang it, we love our cars. They’re like our own personal mobile existence worlds. Calvin pees on Ford and Hey! That’s me! That miniature crown deodorizer on my dash smells like my Aunt Myrna. She’s SO funny and smells good. Everyone who rides with me should smell Aunt Myrna.

Nobody likes the bus. Taxis are great when you’re drunk but they smell like puke on Saturday night. You can pry my car from my cold dead butt cheeks

To me it is clear: the robotaxi will be built by Optimus in small teams using the new method and hence no longer requires giga factories. That is why they delay the new model until Optimus is ready. Could be another production hell in the beginning next year but the only way to make it profitable. Nobody can imagine this today but I see it happening.
