Themes:
Codependency, Empathy, People-Pleasing, Self-Abandonment, Over-Functioning

Summary:
In all of the years I have been doing this work and the thousands and thousands of messages I receive, codependency is by far one of the biggest issues I see. Over-functioning, over-delivering, people pleasing and ignoring your own needs? I’ve definitely been there! That’s why this week, I’m re-releasing  one of my most popular episodes EVER to break down what exactly codependency is and how to break free from this unhealthy behavioural pattern.

In this episode I’m joined by my dear friend and all around bad-ass Terri Cole who is a New York based licensed psychotherapist, relationship and empowerment expert, best-selling author and co-creator of the Crushing Codependency course. I cannot speak highly enough of Terri's expertise in this space and am so excited to dive deeper into this incredibly important topic. If you have ever wondered whether you are empathic or perhaps have some traits of codependency, you cannot miss this show!

Discover:
* The signs and symptoms of codependency
* Why this behavioural pattern manifests
* The consequences of codependency throughout childhood, single life and long term relationships

Melody Beatties work has changed my life. I truly enjoyed this discussion and glad to hear there are others who teach and help us who are Recovering Codependents! ❤ the 12 steps and Al-Anon also saved my life!

It’s an addiction like all addictions. Disease is a broad term. Some people cause hi BP, cholesterol or diabetes w lifestyle & end up w a disease. Splitting hairs re a term is a way to avoid the real issue ur afraid to look at.

This is so misleading! Codependency consists of learned survival skills that we developed as a result of dysfunctional childhoods and traumas. Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn…period. Codependency came out of childhood trauma from being ignored, abused, misunderstood, neglected, and abandoned. In order to heal codependency, you need to heal the trauma. No other way around it. We weren’t born with it… not a disease! Our codependent skills probably saved our lives as children, but now as adults It’s doing nothing but harming us, and needs to be understood. Takes a lot of work!!!!

Melody Beattie’s book is not based on Al Anon or people that are codependent because they are with an addict or an alcoholic. It’s part of it but it’s not all of it as she explains it. There are four different types or scenarios where people become codependent. why don’t you read the book… The newest version is out and the workbook
