We moved from the city to the country. It is 100% a learning process. We're on 4.5 acres with 3 horses. We got into egg laying, meat birds and tried turkeys. The meatbirds and turkeys were processed, packaged, and frozen. After harvesting the meat birds and turkeys, we had over 300 pounds of meat. (Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of poultry for food LOL) At one point we had 40+ egg layers, that were producing almost 30 eggs daily. with age, our dogs, and other predetors, we're down to 23 chickens, which are still producing 10+ eggs daily. We give eggs away and use the older eggs to feed the chickens and mix in our compost. We been growing all kinds of vegetables for the last couple years. There is the startup cost and cost of feed (#2). It ain't cheap, but knowing if there is ever a shortage, we won't starve and we have something worth trading for.
