Chapter 1 matter
What is Matter
Properties of particles of matter
States of matter
Force of cohesion & Adhesion
Anything that occupies space and has mass is called matter.
Matter occupies space
Matter has mass
Composition of matter
Atom: The smallest particle of matter which may or may not exist independently.
Molecule: The smallest particle of matter which can exist independently
Characteristics of matter particles
Matter particles or molecules are extremely small in size
The matter particles have space between them.
The matter particles are in state of continuous motion.
Matter particles attract each other.
All the molecules of one particular material are identical in shape, size as well as mass.
States of matter
1. A solid has a definite shape and distinct boundaries.
2. A solid has a definite volume.
3. Solids do not flow.
4. Solids are rigid and cannot be compressed.
5. The mass of a solid having a fixed volume is usually more than for a liquid or a gas.
6. The constituents molecules of solid are closely packed.
7. The intermolecular force in solids are quite strong
8. A solid may be transformed into a liquid by heating it up to a high temperature known as melting point.
Characteristics of liquids
1. A liquid has a definite volume but no shape of its own.
2. Liquids can flow
3. Liquid cannot be compressed easily.
4. Liquids are dense
5. The constituents molecules in a liquid are less closely packed
6. The intermolecular force in liquid are less strong as compared to a solid but strong as compared to a gas .
7. A liquid may be transformed into a gaseous state by heating it up to its boiling points.
8. A liquid may be transformed into its solid state by cooling it up to its freezing point.
Characteristics of gases
1. A gas has neither a definite volume nor a shape of its shape
2. Gases can flow
3. Gases are non rigid and can compressed easily
4. The constituents molecules of gas are least packed
5. Gases are much lighter than solids and liquids
6. The intermolecular forces in gases are extremely weak.
7. A gas may be transformed into its liquids state by cooling it up its condensation point
Force of cohesion
The intermolecular force among molecules of same substance.
Force of adhesion
The intermolecular force among molecules of two different substance.
