Okay, this is not placebo. This is necebo. Nocebo is when your brain gets negative actions because it expects pain. placebo is when your brain expects positive movements and thoughts because of beliefs.

It's called the phantom hand effect, simply what's happening is simultaneously rubbing the real hand, and the fake hand for about a minute or two, it makes your brain believe that's your real hand.

The brain isn't stupid, it's just making an assumption based off what you can physically see. It's similar to having an amputee have a mirror on one of their legs or arms, to scratch an itch on a limb that no longer exists, but the nerves still think it does. Just as you assume someone is telling you the truth, the brain assumes your body is telling the truth.

Fun fact: this can also be used to help phantom pains/itches by making the body believe it’s perceiving your missing body part by reflecting your other body part (if only one is missing) in a mirror and then scratching/massaging it

They did this same study with cancer patients. They told them they had cancer(when they didn't) and they started to have similar symptoms as cancer patients(hair was even falling out). It's a reason why grandma always said "if you sick, act like your aren't sick or you'll make it worse".
