Great video! Im a MacDonald myself, living in the Netherlands. When I visited Scotland for the first time with my family, someone at the border checked our passports, noticed our name and said "Welcome Home". Great people, great country!

A couple of points: 1) All the ancestors you show that came before, and including, Somerled were Gall-Gaels, i.e. mixed Gaelic and Norwegian 2) The Kingdom of the Isles was officially part of Norway until 1266 when it was transferred to Scotland (the Treaty of Perth)- you implied that the transfer happened a century earlier during the time of Somerled.

Thank you for doing this. As a MacDonald, I am ALWAYS pleased to see us get ANY recognition that is not centered on the Golden Arches.

A couple of points - Member of the Clan refer to it as Clan Donald. Most Scottish Clans use the whole family name (e.g Clam MacMillan, ) Clan Donald is different . The family name is MacDonald (McDonald, Donnelly, Connolly, etc, etc) but the Clan name is Donald.

Godfrey's title may be Baron, but in this context, he is known as Lord MacDonald, Chief of the Name and Arms of Macdonald, High Chief of Clan Donald. He is referred to as High Chief because there are four other Chiefs within Clan Donald:

Macdonald of Sleat
Captain and Chief of Clanranald
Chief of Glengarry
Chief of Antrim

I'm curious as to how Canada's 1st Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, connects to this family tree.

What a coincidence, I was just doing some family research earlier today! (my ancestors were septs of one of the MacDonald clans, most likely Clan Ranald)
This is excellent timing, and the bagpipe intro was 👌

Awesome! Love seeing that early connection to the isle of Man and also to the Earl of Ross...my roots are in the Isle of Man and our tartan is the Ross plaid. Terrific chart, Matt....and well narrated, Jack Rackam!

That's the most Scottish intro I've ever heard

"If Ronald MacDonald were a real person, he would be somewhere on this tree."

I guess the Hamburgler would be as well.

So dope. My best friend is a Gunn and I traced his family tree back to Harald Fairhair (the first king of Norway) Scottish family histories are so amazing. I would love to see you do a Gunn Clan video!

A video I can relate to. Funnily enough, my dad’s grandparents were from Irish ‘McDonalds’, but I was able to trace a female Maclean on that side all the way back to Princess Margaret of Scotland, so apparently the two versions converge. Fascinating! Also the Clan would just be Donald, The old meaning behind the spelling of MacDonald is Son of Donald, as in a Son of the Founding Father (Domnhall/Donald).
EDIT: It’s why we capitalize the D in MacDonald.

Wow, I can't believe the clan was able to recover from their downfall to start up the most successful burger chain in the US, truly inspiring.

My grandma is a Campbell on her father's side and a Crawford on her mother's. Her paternal grandmother (my great-great grandmother) was a Gorrie who emigrated to Michigan from Orkney, which is ironic given that the Gorries were a branch of the MacDonalds from Clanranald. And my grandfather was a Sinclair somewhere in his father's lineage. His father's middle name was Sinclair, and was from him that I received Sinclair as my own middle name.

As a member of Clan Rattray, this is a great video on a fellow clan. I would love if you did similar ones to these in the future. Thank you Matt and Jack
