Why Does Clan MacDonald Hate Clan Campbell?

Perhaps the largest feud between any of the Highland clans is between the MacDonalds and the Campbells which has not yet been forgotten even today in the 21st century.

The Glencoe massacre (and the MacDonald/Campbell feud) was referenced in the show "Mad Men". Pete Campbell tries to get his daughter into a private school where the headmaster is a MacDonald. The headmaster politely refuses to accept her, and when pressed to give his reasons, he starts raving about how Campbells aren't to be trusted. Funnily enough, Glencoe itself isn't mentioned by name, but both men, Americans in the 1960s, know exactly what issue is being discussed. Pete's wife, meanwhile, stares on in bewilderment as she has no idea what's going on.

One of my friends (who’s a waiter) was working at the local yacht club at a tasting of scotches and he told me that one of the Scottish attendants saw the others kilt (which had the clan tartan on it) and started yelling at him, as apparently one was a Macdonald and one was a Campbell. It’s interesting to see how long rivalries like this can last

Bear in mind that the Lords of the Isles were loyal to Scotland for a time, but they were loyal to the Bruce family. Once the Stewarts took over, they pretty quickly found themselves at odds.

The Massacre at Glencoe was in 1693 there are MacDonalds in America today who refuse to buy Campbell's soup citing Glencoe.

Campbell roughly translates to 'crooked mouth' which essentially means 'untrustworthy'. As a Campbell I can confirm we have crooked mouths and are at times untrustworthy.

Great video. Later generations of Clan Donald and Campbell fought together on a few occasions too (after the massacre). It would be great to see a video on the Battle of Bannockburn, and also on the Gallowglass mercenaries and their role in Irish history.

I was at Glencoe last week, walking the west highland way . It's beautiful and The place where the massacre took place is still marked . Amazing
