Scottish Clans: The story behind Clan Campbell

Every weekend, Carl MacDougall, will tell the story of one of Scotland's famous Clans. This weekend, we take a look at the Campbells.

THEIR reputation was sealed when Captain Robert Campbell of Glen Lyon led the massacre of his MacDonald hosts at Glencoe - an act of betrayal that has forever stained the Campbell name.

But the Glencoe Massacre can be seen the culmination of a feud that began almost 500 years previously when the Campbells fell out with the MacDougalls, who were MacDonald kinsmen. They fought in a place that became known as the Red Ford, because the burn is said to have run with blood.

Really feels quite profound reading all the comments from fellow Campbell's! Distant family! Much love to you all from Adelaide, Australia ❤

What’s ironic is, many generations later, I am a descendant of the Campbells on my fathers side, and descended from the MacDonalds on my mother’s side. My grandma still shares the story of the Glencoe Massacre (as she heard it) to this day with my family. History is strange and wonderful.

The MacDonalds forget they massacred far more Campbell’s in Inverary than we killed (36) in Glencoe. Proud Texan and Campbell.

I’m a step relative of some Campbells descended from this clan and they are very loving people, they always treated me and my family the same as their own blood, even more so than some of my actual blood relatives

I am so very proud of my Campbell ancestors—their strength, their undying courage, their determination and ability to overcome every obstacle, whatever it might be❗️

McDonald's slaughtered woman and children at Inverary, just a few years before Glencoe. Unlike the Inverary slaughter, Glencoe wasn't an attack ordered by Clan Campbell, it was a regiment under royal order which happened to have been led by a Campbell, and being a southern regiment it had contained several Campbell's among other Clan names. Glencoe was and still is used as propaganda by the jealous upon the Ignorant. With many allies comes many enemy's.
Never forget we were one of William Wallace's and Robert the Bruce's staunchest allies against the English for independence. Then later we were the Clan that gave Scottish hero Rob Roy sanctuary and protection. We were also key in stopping the Catholics and their pretender king taking over Scotland and England with our regiments, Clansmen and allies. Ne Obliviscaris! Long live Scotland!

This makes me even more proud to have been born a Campbell!

To my grandfather it was always so simple. The MacDonalds were traitors to the crown, and our boys refused to be.

I don't know much of my heritage, being Canadian. But I'm proud to be a loyal Campbell.

My grandmother’s father came from Scotland. He held from the clan Campbell. The story goes one day a man from Scotland came to give the old Timer his fiefdom back home in Scotland. My grandmother’s father chased that man off with a pitchfork yelling “I never go back to that mud bog.” My great aunts spoke of it as if they lost their castle. Lol

It's highly ironic, at least to me, that my lineage is a heavy blend of both the Macdonald and Campbell clan...Like the lineage is so mixed I'm shocked I'm not sprouting a third limb lmao.
