Comparing 'BUDGET' anamorphic adapters with the Sony FX6 // Aivascope 1.5x, Slr magic, Greatjoy

For a future project I wanted to test out some anamorphic adapters and as they are not wildly available in every country I thought I'd upload a little comparison / review .

Overall, I don't think they are a waste of money! Camera's have so much resolution these day that adding more glass elements in front of the lens still gives you more than enough resolution. So if you have a project that could benefit from the anamorphic look they are definitely a viable option!

My favourite is definitely the Aivascope 1.5x because of the sharpness it retains and of course the amber flare is just beautiful. Followed by the GREAT JOY 1.35x as it offers a lot value for its pice. Finishing with the SLR Magic anamorphot-40 1.33x definitely also has it's purpose. As it produces quite some cinematic images. But it gives the footage a very distinctive look.

All shot on the #sonyfx6

How to Desqueeze anamorphic in premiere pro:
Right click on clip - modify - interpret footage - pixel aspect ratio - conform to - Choose between 2x / 1.5x / 1.33x :)

On a mission to become a true Cinematographer while being the most relatable filmmaker on YouTube :)

Ciao.

Great video!

I've been using the absolute heck out of the OG GreatJoy 1.35x adapter for a long time now. Really pleased with the performance.

As you said. I think the aivascope comes closest to the real anamorphic (2x) Look. And it only has a 1, 5x stretch.

I bought the Great Joy after seeing this content (thank you) and then adapted my Sirui 50mm and 75mm 1.33x lenses with it, resulting in 1.8x squeeze - and this is what made these lenses come to life.

Without the adapter, the Siruis provide the 1.33x focal width benefit but lack all other anamorphic characteristics, like outer-frame swirls and distortion, and waterfall bokeh. But, with the GJ adapter, you get all this and more of that ‘Panavision’ anamorphic quality.

I shot this combo on my Red Komodo and I love it. (All shots apart from the girl with the umbrella):

What about the new moment adapter? It seems better than these?

Interesting comparison, the Great Joy seems the closest to my recently acquired SIRUI 1.25x adaptor.
Thanks for this 👍

Fantastic comparison video, thank you for making this!

I saw you're using the Aivascope on Sony FX6

I wondered, how do you find the adapter performs on a Full-Frame sensor?

I'm looking at buying an Aivascope to pair with my FX3, but have seen a lot of footage where the look is very "Intense" on full-frame cameras. (Distortion, CA, etc.)

I wondered if you found this to be the case?

great work on the video! I have the aivascope and love it! what lenses are the sharpest in your opinion? Also - what adapter do you have at the end of your aivascope on the taking side?

I don't see what lens you have put the adapters on. I did quite some tests on Lumix MFT and S5 and it's about finding the best combination of lens + adapter. Very poor or very cheap lenses sometimes look fantastic and very expensive hyper sharp dreamlenses look like complete crap when you put on the adapter. I have the SLR magic 1.33 40 and 50 versions. Also the setting near/normal on the adapter works very weird sometimes. Many times I put the 40 in between the 2 to get the best result.

Have you ttried the Moment? im deciding between the GJ and the Moment. The GJ is half the price.

Did you try the Moment 1.33x adapter? Or the Sirui 1.25? Those are getting the most attention on Youtube, at least here in the states.

Can I use these adapters set to infinity focus and then let the lens do the autofocusing? or does it have to be all manual focusing?

Great video! I have a question, you still can have autofocus with these adapters?

Slr magic is worth it with the range finder and the non square front

Hardcore DNA Rectilux is a high quality one, better than these 3, imo.

For the price of Aivascope is better buying "affordable" anamorphic lenses... Sirui, Laowa, Greatjoy...
