You mentioned that with real anamorphic you gain image on the left and right of frame, but the specific thing that I think is worth mentioning
about anamorphic over cropping 2:39:1 is that if you shoot a 2x dequeeze coefficient, your 50mm lens now has the perspective of a 50mm but the FOV of a 25mm. Knowing that detail about the lens is huge for a DP. If you crop 2:39:1 on say a spherical 50mm, you have the perspective of a 50mm with the FOV of a 50mm. The mismatch of perspective and FOV is one of the biggest selling points for anamorphic. Cheers man!

The main benefit of anamorphics for me is actually the difference perspective. When using a wide anamorphic like 40mm or 35mm (on S35) you get a very natural perspective, similar to the human eye you can’t get with cropping a spherical lenses. Also long lenses look much less claustrophobic, so you can generate real pressure with long lens close ups without getting too tight.

One of the advantages of an anamorphic lens is it gives you the compression characteristics of a longer focal length while retaining the wider horizontal field of view of a shorter focal length. For example, a 50mm lens with a 2x stretch will have the the same horizontal field of view as a 25mm spherical lens, but without causing the perspective distortion typical of the wider lens. Cropping something shot with a spherical lens does not yield the same effect.

love how these videos are looking these days, I mean they always have looked good, but it's cool seeing the progression and some really polished and gorgeous images in these. Thanks for the inspo as always! Cheers

Even cheaper and safer way to get oval bokeh, is to have a oval cut out in a filter and put it on the front. Shoot the lens wide open. Also you can have different shapes cut outs to get stuff like stars, hearts and other tacky things.

I've been following Tito Ferradans for years, and even his channel being relatively small, is cool to see how is basically impossible to talk about anamorphic lenses on youtube without citing him.

I forgot all about this amazing channel I’m so happy I found it again

Thanks as always Simon, I've been experimenting with bokeh filters recently and have definitely noticed their limitations! Really cool to see those in-camera mods.

The mathematically pleasing thing about 1.8x squeeze is that for film or digital 4:3 sensor/film projection area it stretches to an *exact* 12:5 aspect ratio (aka 2.40:1 which isn’t the same as 2.39:1 which it’s often rounded of to).

always a good way to start off the day when simon uploads

Nice video...
The harder-to-find streak filter is the clear one. Obviously, a streak filter does not alter the aspect ratio of the lens but provides "suggestive" anamorphic flare "effect" under specific circumstances

I'd have loved if you compared them side by side! Afaik, an anamorphic has a distinct compression effect due to having a wider vertical FoV than an horizontal one

Great video, well explained. I also have a converted Helios 44-2 but with the aperture blades removed so I have to use a variable ND filter to control exposure.

Great idea for comparison and well executed. Thank you for sharing these thoughts and all the beautiful imagery :)

You can also get the fake lens flares with a clear plastic string, I did it with a cheap 50 mm 1.8 and a Rebel T3i

I did it with an analog Sigma 28-70mm and it worked well. Also did that with my samyang 35mm.

I did the same exact thing, except I used an anamorphic filter (with an oval shaped cutout) from Vid-Atlantic. I loved the results from it.
