They should have advertised it as a quirky earthbound inspired RPG

They shouldve used the 50s sci fi and horror influence for the marketing instead. They couldve made fake ufo sightings for commercials or something like that.

They should've made the advertising UFO/Alien themed instead of gross themed

I figure, like you said, the slogan “Because This Game Stinks.” gives it leery looks from passersby.

The marketing for Earthbound is baffling. Besides the gross out advertisements, the game’s commercial also did a horrible job at showing off the game, showing Ness entering a battle and then skipping over it.

A better idea for a marketing campaign for Earthbound that could fit with 90s American kids would be to do a similar commercial to the live action one for the first Mother, but instead make it more flashy, over the top and "cool." Like it can start with a classic alien invasion set-up with a city being attacked by aliens and giant robots, but only a few certain kids aren't running away and once a giant robot (a Starman), is about to destroy them, the kids suddenly fight it and other aliens with Ness and Paula using superpowers, Jeff using gadgets and lasers (maybe have him push up his glasses to give him that stereotypical nerd vibe), and Poo stereotypically fighting a group of aliens like Bruce Lee while some "cool music" plays that cuts back and forth to gameplay footage and the kids make "cool" poses after the Starman is destroyed.

I remember this game came in a huge box compared to regular SNES games.

The Final Fantasy series succeeded on SNES, so why did Nintendo feel that they needed such an extreme marketing campaign for this game?

I don't get this myth. Games like Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy were released at this point. Even Breath of Fire and Final Fantasy IV (as FF2), Final Fantasy Mystic Quest were released. So why does everyone say, RPG's weren't a thing back than, and that's the reason the game didn't sell well. I think it has more to do with the NES Style Graphic and the Old School Battle Screen with no Animations in it. The Game looked weird, and I think the the first battle made the people turn the console of.

I think that if it came out after Pokemon, it might have had a good chance!

I feel like it was a bunch of things that just kind of piled up. Poor marketing, RPGs still being relatively niche in the west, the graphics, but the biggest one was likely the price. Every copy came with a strategy guide which made this game significantly more expensive than most other games at the time.

Idk what the deal was, I saw the adverts and the giant snes box and I was instantly pulled in. I begged my parents for this game day one!

The game didn't stink, the marketing did. Nintendo of America never do this again what were you thinking.

Considering that it was the 90s, players probably wanted more “edgy” mature games instead of the cutesy style the game was going for. Even after the name was changed from Mother 2 to Earthbound (for obvious reasons), and changing the cover art to Final Starman

That's really interesting. I just completed my first playthrough of EB (after hearing about it for a long time but never trying it) and oh my goodness what an awesome game!! It definitely does not stink XD
