The Correct Order To Play The Mother Games In

Mother, Earthbound, Mother 3, many people have asked "what order should I play the Mother games in?". It's me, I'm people. I recently played the Mother series for the very first time. You can find those playthroughs on this channel in fact(linked below), but what I also did was seek out the opinions of many Earthbound and Mother aficionados concerning the play order. I received a ton of feedback, and by the time I played all the games and made this video - I had a clear picture of what correct was.

Ultimately, any order is fine, and the best order is whatever order you can play them in soonest.

from the wiki:
"Mother[a] (known as EarthBound outside Japan) is a video game series that consists of three role-playing video games: Mother (1989), known as EarthBound Beginnings outside Japan, for the Family Computer; Mother 2 (1994), known as EarthBound outside Japan, for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System; and Mother 3 (2006) for the Game Boy Advance.

Written by Shigesato Itoi, published by Nintendo, and featuring game mechanics modeled on the Dragon Quest series, Mother is known for its sense of humor, originality, and parody. The player uses weapons and psychic powers to fight hostile enemies, which include animated everyday objects, aliens and brainwashed people. Signature elements of the series include a lighthearted approach to plot, battle sequences with psychedelic backgrounds, and the "rolling HP meter": player health ticks down like an odometer rather than instantly being subtracted, allowing the player to take preventative action, such as healing or finishing the battle, before the damage is fully dealt. While the franchise is popular in Japan, in the Anglosphere it is best associated with the cult following behind EarthBound.

EarthBound's English localizers were given great liberties when translating the Japanese game's cultural allusions. The American version sold poorly despite a multimillion-dollar marketing budget. Mother 3 was originally slated for release on the Nintendo 64 and its 64DD disk drive accessory, but was cancelled in 2000. Three years later, the project was reannounced for the Game Boy Advance alongside a rerelease of Mother and Mother 2 in the combined cartridge Mother 1 + 2. Mother 3 abandoned the 3D graphics progress for a 2D style, and became a bestseller upon its release. EarthBound was rereleased for the Wii U Virtual Console in 2013, and Mother received its English-language debut for the same platform in 2015, retitled EarthBound Beginnings. In 2022, Nintendo released Mother 1 and 2 to their Nintendo Switch Online

EarthBound is widely regarded as a video game classic, and is included in multiple top-ten lists. In absence of continued official support for the series, members of the EarthBound fan community organized online to advocate for further series releases through petitions and fan art. Their projects include a full fan translation of Mother 3, a full-length documentary, and a fangame sequel-turned-spiritual successor called Oddity. Ness, the protagonist of EarthBound, received exposure from his inclusion in all five entries of the Super Smash Bros. series. Other Mother series locations and characters have made appearances in the fighting games."

2, 1, 3 was the order I played. I think 1, 2, 3 is ideal for people that have experience playing old school RPGs, but for a wider audience the order I played feels more natural.

1-2-3 is the way to go for me, seeing the series evolve over time is lovely and adds to the experience

I played 2, 3, 1

After playing 2 and 3 you fall in love with the series and you don't care about the graphics but the story

I played them 3 2 then 1. All the games made me cry. I have a twin brother and a pretty rough childhood in a small community, so they resonate with me on a different level. These games are my favorite for sure.

I played 2, 3, and then 1. All three games have their charm. I like 1 and 2 location settings. I found the first two games more charming than Mother 3. Mother 3 is a great game, but it personally didn't like its story much. I recommend playing either 1 or 2 first and if you like them, play 3.

I played in 1, 2, 3 order but I always go back to 1 for it's relatively short length, and after a couple of playthroughs its my favorite of the three.

I think Mother 1 is a bit underrated (I actually prefer it to 2) so I always recommend 1, 2, 3 -

I do think there's story progression that's a bit underappreciated due to the Mother 1 pushback (not helped by the fact that the official English release is technically a beta, so the final boss has the wrong name, etc.)

That being said, 1, 2, 3 is prolly more suited for like
1. it's someone already committed to playing all three anyway
or
2. Someone you know isnt squeamish about older games like that ( I mean for some folks even Mother 2 is too archaic :^p)

There's also always the option of Tomato's translation of the Mother 1 GBA port, which is a much more faithful script and has an easy mode!

Ultimately tho, regardless of preferences, to most crucial thing is to be nice and respect one another ✌

I played them in reverse order 3, 2, 1. I originally tried to start with 2 but there were so many clunky aspects that eventually, I just couldn’t get through it stopping well before half way. Eventually I played 3 which solved all the problems and was incredible in every way. From here I was better able to go into the past to play earlier games and know what I was playing was worth it.

The best order is ABCABACBA where A is the most replayable game and C is the least replayable game. Since it allows you to experience all six possible orders and ensures that the most replayable game gets replayed the most.

For me, it's 2->1->3. Earthbound made me get a hang of the game mechanics and the universe. Then I went to play Mother 1 and I probably wouldn't recommend playing it first, it can be unfriendly to new players. And then Mother 3, as a conclusion to the trilogy.

I played in the reverse order and it was great. But i undestand the point of starting with the best one, on the other hand, I believe that if I had started with Mother 1 I would hardly have finished it.

2, 3, 1.

I actually think Mother 1 has a lot of charm. But I'm the sort of person who fixates on a retro RPG once every few years. I like the pace of retro RPGs as an occasional indulgence. I couldn't stand playing them all the time, but just the grinding and exploring just scratches an occasional itch.

Also, since there was less info about Mother 1 online at the time, it felt like there were truly surprises waiting for me.

2 for the layout,
1 for story,
Then Replay 2 to warm up and then play 3,
Then go outside and take a deep breath cuz you just played 3,
Then 2 because you just played 3

I played them in the order 2 - 3 - 1, and I feel like that is a good order for me. I was able to get past the grindy parts of Mother 1 because I was used to how the gameplay worked.

Although I did 2, 3, 1, I do indeed recommend 2, 1, 3. Gameplay wise, Earthbound is on par with Mother 3, but Mother 3’s ending is absolutely suited for it as a final game to play rather than a first. And playing Earthbound will teach you a lot of stuff that can help in Beginnings, as well as being very familiar.

Alternatively, play them at the same time! No one ever mentions this, but I also think people should try playing some of the games simultaneously. Specifically, play 1 and 2 at the same time, at about the same pace for both, and because you’ll likely finish 2 before 1, play some of 3 every now and then to help keep you feeling refreshed as you play through 1. But definitely beat 1 first, then 3. Not sure how good of an idea it is, but I feel like people should certainly try it.

I played 3, 1, 2, I think it was the worst order to play this games

I played 1-2-3 and had a similar experience to you, I've always been able to appreciate older games so was able to look past some of Mother 1's issues and genuinely had a lot of fun with it, only to be absolutely blown away by Earthbound/Mother 2. So I'd say 1-2-3 is probably the best bet for people IF they're okay dealing with the outdated mechanics that older titles tend to have. I'm not actually finished with Mother 3, currently up to chapter 5, but I think I've played enough to know that it's the game most suited to being the finale, I've already gotten teary multiple times haha.
