Puerto Rico History -US Invasion of 1898

On May 12th of 1898, the United States began the military offensive to take over the island of Puerto Rico. This was a result of the Spanish American War which by then was being dominated by the United States. The US sought to remove Spanish influence from the region and it also wanted access to its former possessions. The push to take over Puerto Rico militarily consisted of a Naval Campaign and a land campaign. By December 10, the Treaty of Paris was signed thus ending the Spanish American War and ceding Cuba, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico to the United States.
