One thing I've never liked about Trek is that they insist on rewriting much of their established lore in order to keep up (more or less) with Real History. I've always maintained that the Trekverse would be far more compelling if they maintained their lore, kept their established timeline, and adapted their stories as such. This would effectively make the entire series an alt-reality show... but then, wasn't it already, really? But... this is just a personal preference as a sci fi writer. I still love, and always will, the franchise.

It doesn't take much of a retcon to presume that since Data was unfamiliar with the medium, he may have been referring only to broadcast television as _television_ but not cable or streaming, in which case the 2040 deadline for its ending is plausible.

I think Michael Keaton's Batman's explanation of time travel in the Flash applies here with the Eugenics Wars and WW3. There has been so much time travel shenanigans that its bound to have repercussions to the time line in unexpected ways.

It is established in Trek that there are multiple timelines/universes. It is also established in Trek that timelines can be moved or stretched by temporal interference. Therefore Trek writers can move history around however they want in order tell stories that connect with a then-contemporary audience.

Wasn't there a mention in the SNW episode 'Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow' that tiny alterations in the in the past caused the timeline to change, which resulted in the dates for the Eugenics Wars to be moved to the mid 21st century?

I like to think the effect Star Trek has on the world is why WW3 got postponed.

Didn't see this in the comments, but you had heard that they accidently created a miro warp bubble for an insanely small amount of time while researching something else entirely so we now know of one way to make tiny warp bubbles. But they have to finish their current grant and project before they can go back and try to get money to explore making more stable warp bubbles and making them large enough to be of use to us.

As much as my mind lives within the trek universe, it is, after all, fiction, so, predictions of "what could be" can be just as daft as those films people used to make about the future (as in, where we are now) back in the early to mid 20th century, the idea of having so much free time because machines do all the work, the household appliances that cook, clean and pamper you, flying cars, all that was predicted and never really happened either... :P

I guess the TV one is interesting because in truth, cable TV IS on a decline in favor of streaming services (netflix, youtube). To be honest, it's actually likely that by 2040 the format of TV that was popular in the 20th century will actually be obsolete. I guess the question remains - do streaming services count as TV? I'd say no, but it's clearly up for debate.

2:10. In a way we are likely to see TV go away by 2040. Cable companies are starting to cut their own cables and go to streaming only. The latest is Spectrum, the 2nd largest cable company.

United Ireland has been looking like a major possibility since 2016 but the main obstacle remains that neither Dublin or London want to deal with that hot mess aspiring to be a semi-autonomous state. The most likely resolution is that speculated in that infamous Irish Post-Appocolyptic film where the whole of Ulster is abandoned by both.

Dude, ST DS9 "Chrysalis" was on last night. Even weirder, 9:14 is THE EXACT MOMENT I changed the channel over to it.
