I Mainly Boost When Mastering 🎛

I boost 90% of the time with my EQ when mastering.

I probably only do subtractive EQ about 10% of the time.

The reason why is that boosts are better 🤷🏻‍♂️

When you boost in certain areas, you get a natural dip from the boosts either side.

You also get some flavour and sound of that EQ 👌🏼

Rather than just taking away and not adding anything at all 🙅🏻‍♂️

Only do this if it needs it though of course...

Pultec’s boosting lows and mids do wonders on a master

sometimes I boost to mask certain frequencies e.g boosting 250hz to mask 2.5k if there's too much energy there.

This is somewhat misleading without any context as mastering advice, imo. Sure, if you’re using an EQ that also saturates a boost will give you “flavor” but if your job as a mastering engineer is to balance the track you cut if you need to cut. And very often, using an opposite cut will mean you need less of a boost - for example to brighten a track you could just boost the top but you could boost the top less and cut the bottom a bit too. And by doing it that way, with smaller moves, your less likely to create unintended issues.
