WHY YOUR MASTERING SOUNDS BAD 😬

❌ Don't try and master whilst you're still mixing

Get the mix sounding finished to your ears first

Then take the limiter off (if you've used one)

👀 And send it to someone else to master... *cough*

Or if you want to master it yourself, wait 48 hours until you do so.

You want to master this as a stereo file to avoid you tweaking the mix even further

This way you'll get better at mixing and much better at mastering.

Remember these are two totally separate processes from each other

And this is for a reason!

👍🏼 Mastering is only there to improve a really good-sounding mix and get it ready for distribution

I know a few talented engineers that always mix into a mastering chain. Never even take it off. Now I'll admit that this top down mixing approach is not for beginners, nor does every pro like it. But it's a very valid approach.

When I make beat, with VSTi and samples, I add on the master channel compressor and limiter. So I can hear some finish sound, it helps me to mixing more better. But when all done, we off compression and limiter, than we make mastering.

I mix into my limiters because mixing just to undo every balance you've worked hard for by slapping limiters at the end/during mastering sounds dumb to me. Also it's really the only way I find to get somewhere comparable to reference tracks imo

I do the same, but because my laptop cant handle plugins with oversampling on a multiple tracks project 😥

So if I do top down mixing should I start on buses? How much is considered mastering vs mixbus processing?

Please answer🙏🏽Im mastering in the same session but after I’m done with the mix 100%! I just add a EQ and stereo width, glueing … Small things before boosting it. (Waves IMP)
Schould Master the WAV in a new session? Or is it okay to do it in one go?

And what is Stem Mastering? Is it Mixing because it is not the stereo file or Mastering with Stems? But do I loose the mastering perspective because I again work on stems and not on the stereo file? In general I do not agree with you statement. I am a fan to fix it on the source and if I see trustic changes needed in mastering I give it back to fix it in the mix. The risk it getting in a endless circle. What I do is generate stems to audio, do the mastering on the stereo master and if I am faster on a stem I do it there. In this case I have something between classical mastering und mixing the stems. On statement i totally agree (make a break between mixing & mastering). Thanks for sharing :-)

I usually have an ssl g compressor I mix into, and keep under 4db compression, and basically as you stated in another video. (Roll off low detect, ratio, etc.) it’s usually super conservative compression, so I usually keep it on before mastering, wondering your thoughts on this? Should I stop doing this?

Question: When it comes to more extreme styles of music such as dubstep, I like to mix and master within the same project because I have more control over the details and I seem to get great results. Do you personally find this technique suitable for that genre?

To be honest, if you are mixing and mastering your own work you shouldn't even need more than a limiter/clipper and maybe an EQ for the "mastering"
