Regarding the "fugitive slave act" there's no guarantee that Northerners would comply with it; and in fact, many refused- and that's good news that the slave-owners, thieves that they were, lost out: it was unenforceable.

First of all its not a little book unless you read the Cliff Notes.
Its 45 chapters and 22 hours at a good clip to read.
