These spectators should be held accountable, all the property damages and potential career damaging injuries. I feel that there should be appropriate punishments.

Here is a crazy idea. When watching a bicycle race, stay 1 meter back from the racing surface. Not that difficult! The racers deserve the courtesy of having the course free of idiots.

Pity Lampaert. What was the fan trying to perform by clapping his hands while bending over? Such people should be punished. Lopez did the right thing at that Giro.

Hold them accountable or keep all spectators off the course completely. Take your pick. Riders should not have to suffer bodily injury or financial loss because of embiciles.

Sorry folks, but these routes are really, really long, and you'd be complaining even more if there were zero spectators on the side of the road. Lampaert was riding in the shoulder, trying to avoid the cobbles that were the intended parcours. When you ride there, you can expect to see a pair of clapping hands every now and again. I put this one at least partially on Lampaert (unfortunately). The riders are NOT supposed to be on the shoulders of the cobbled sections.

It's a sad incident, but not out of the ordinary for a race that draws such a large turnout.

To be fair, the fan was already standing there clapping his hands, like so many other fans, when Lampaert suddenly moved to the right 10 meters before he hit the guy, who didn't have time to respond. So for a part it was a bit of an unlucky incident, it could have happened with hundreds of other fans too. I think we should rather look at this as a structural behaviour problem than focussing all anger on this one guy. But the problem is when it's busy with fans, somebody whose view is blocked by another person in front of him will move a little bit closer to the road, the person behind moves even closer and so on, and everybody still ends up on the road. It's herd behaviour.

The spectator should be fined & be held liable and sued for his interfering with the safe operation of a race in progress. Cycling isn't as dangerous as the lack of security that the events organizers provide. Whoever thinks "this" is racing, try that on an NBA court or a soccer or football field. Security would grab you by the neck and escort you out and some places will have police waiting for you outside the stadium or facility. Why don't cyclists get the same assurance of being protected by their organizers?

You can clearly see the spectator clapping with straight arms while the cyclists arrived everybody else stop and step back. But Mr. Idiot there thought that he was special and didn't needed to do that. Find and fine, these idiots ruin the sport for the real cycling fans.
