CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Jackson (James Spader) and O'Neil (Kurt Russell) are taken to see Ra (Jaye Davidson), O'Neil's secret intentions are revealed.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
This lucrative, elephantine-budgeted sci-fi opus paved the way for director Roland Emmerich's mega-hit Independence Day (1996). The story commences in Giza, Egypt, circa 1928, where an archaeological expedition unearths an ancient ring with cryptic hieroglyphs. The film then moves to the present day, where Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is busily trying to convince a group of skeptics that the pyramids were not built by man, but by an extraterrestrial force. After the lecture, a military man approaches him and offers him a job translating the said ring; its inscriptions actually constitute a map to a massive stargate (or interstellar portal). The army sends over resident crackpot colonel Jack O'Neill (Kurt Russell) to travel through the stargate and see what's on the other side; Jackson accompanies him, and the two men turn up in a desert planet on the other side of the universe, with three moons in its sky. The world in question is ruled by Ra (Jaye Davidson), a hermaphroditic Egyptian sun god, who oppresses hordes of slave workers. Jackson and O'Neill then join forces to help the said workers revolt against their oppressor.

this movie is still the best sci-fi movie based ancient Egypt myth. and one of my all-time classics. the voice effects, CGI was pure and perfect. even for today's standarts..

The costumes of the Anubis guards are freaking awesome and the animation of the unmasking is on point. Amazing movie even now.

You know what I just realized....he not only surrounds himself with children as human shields, but also as potential hosts to jump into in case his host is injured/killed.

This got a whole generation of kids into Egyptology.

I am fascinated by the guy who plays Ra. He's just so perfect for this role.

God-tier set design. If this were made today, they'd all be against a greenscreen.

I saw it in 1994. I found it exceptionnal, both by the effects and the story.

Never realized they used the face of Akhenaten for Ra's headdress. Some say hes the one who looks most "alien" compared to other Egyptian kings.

I love Ra's expression at 2:42, he's like, "The fuck you looking at?" - Jaye slayed the shit out of this role! You could tell even Kurt Russell was taken offguard by this guy's amazing presence.

I love the way Ra understands human nature enough that he knows that most men will not shoot through children.

Happy 25th Anniversary to Stargate (1994-2019). 🌌

The crazy thing is, despite all the sci fi stuff, this is actually one of the more accurate depictions of ancient Egypt I've seen in a live action Hollywood film, down to the shaved head with sidelocks on the little boys and the nail guards on Ra. Gods of Egypt should have taken notes

I still remember how impressive was this scene at the cinema. This movie became an instant classic for me. I also remember i watched at cinemas just because there were no tickets for "The Mask" which was our first option that day. At the end, it was way better than the histrionic comedy from Jim Carrey.

One thing I wish in the SG1 series is that they could've maybe delved a little more into Ra's role as the leader of the Goa'uld/Supreme System Lord, since he started it all and was the most powerful etc

Absolutely gave me _chills_ seeing Ra unmask himself for the first time and watching it here I _still_ get goosebumps. He doesn't even _say or do anything_ all that menacing in this scene beyond briefly intimidating Anubis, but you immediately understand that this is The Bad Guy.

i like to think that Oneil and Jackson body language here is veery well acted: Jackson is kneeling, afraid, maybe in awe of Ra, a living embodiment of his studies, while Oneil... Oneil just sees an enemy in Ra, his posture is less relaxed he's ready to spring in action ( as he tries to do shortly after ).

I was just making an outfolding armor in blender, as I recalled this scene.
Stargate is amongst my favorite and most inspiring movies in terms of VFX. Back then I have drawn countless flipbooks of the wormhole and these helmet animations. And now I can enjoy it over and over again and examine every frame. This warms my nerd-hearth.
Looks like they combined the live action head turn with cutout stop motion. You can see the edges flickering. With Ra there is some morphing too.
Love it to find clues of the crafts behind the scenes. It adds another dimension to the watching and is more memorable.
