CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ra (Jaye Davidson) tells Jackson (James Spader) that he will destroy Earth.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
This lucrative, elephantine-budgeted sci-fi opus paved the way for director Roland Emmerich's mega-hit Independence Day (1996). The story commences in Giza, Egypt, circa 1928, where an archaeological expedition unearths an ancient ring with cryptic hieroglyphs. The film then moves to the present day, where Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is busily trying to convince a group of skeptics that the pyramids were not built by man, but by an extraterrestrial force. After the lecture, a military man approaches him and offers him a job translating the said ring; its inscriptions actually constitute a map to a massive stargate (or interstellar portal). The army sends over resident crackpot colonel Jack O'Neill (Kurt Russell) to travel through the stargate and see what's on the other side; Jackson accompanies him, and the two men turn up in a desert planet on the other side of the universe, with three moons in its sky. The world in question is ruled by Ra (Jaye Davidson), a hermaphroditic Egyptian sun god, who oppresses hordes of slave workers. Jackson and O'Neill then join forces to help the said workers revolt against their oppressor.

It’s so fascinating, creepy and brilliant at the same time. Ra is a powerful arrogant alien basically possessing a androgynous looking person, and showing disdain and power with expressions. It’s brilliant, and the actor is incredibly talented

I love the way Ra moves, everything is so graceful and smooth, what an amazing character!

I know Jaye Davidson despised acting and criticized his own skills but not only do i find him outstanding in this film i also couldnt picture anyone else playing Ra better!

I like how Ra just gives little smirks throughout, a sign he thinks he cant be stopped and this is all a game for him

To me personally, Ra and the score are the two things I remember most about this film. Ra's theme in particular is absolutely gorgeous. The slinky strings and the grand, royal accompaniment to his visual spectacle. Genius and timeless.
As for Ra, I've always found it interesting that they cast him to be so androgynous.

Ra's eyebrow raise when Daniel says, "If I refuse" is the pinnacle of nuance in acting. The slightest movement of the brow said so much right there before he began to speak. That is incredible attention to detail in a performance.

My god the acting...at 1:48 when he says "if i refuse" that little eyebrow raise...WHY THE HELL ISNT THIS GUY one of the worlds most famous actors?

1:48 Ra seems so pleased at the thought of the consequences. Like he preferred the latter. His face said "I thought you'd never ask!"

When you cast a man who makes the very pretty pretty-boy James Spader look rather plain, you know you’ve hit the jackpot.

Stargate is easily Roland Emmerich's best film. This scene is extremely well done.

For someone that had very little acting training, Jaye Davidson was convincing enough in the only two movies that he appeared in.

After looking at Ra, his hair, his contenance, and his scheming eyes, I turned from a straight line to a right angle.

For some reason, a lot of people didn't understand this scene even though Ra literally tells Daniel why he needs him at the time. Daniel is the only person who could cause an uprising again and the only one who can stop this one. With some knowledge of the technology and language, Daniel understands that Ra can kill everyone very quickly and that's what Ra needed him to know. It's not about adding tropes or whatever. The uprising is what caused Ra to flee the first time and he has a way to actually prevent it this time by using Daniel.

I watched this as a kid and enjoyed it, but watching it again as an adult, I have so much more appreciation for Jaye as Ra. He perfectly captured androgyny in a way that somehow adds to the sinister, otherworldly nature of the character.
It’s interesting that the casting for the rest of this movie is so generic, but the casting for Ra is so out of the box—and perfect. He’s *so young, * and not traditionally masculine at all.
He’s beautiful and dangerous and sensual and powerful. And again, it’s so surprising that he played the combination of ALL of those traits so perfectly, at such a young age!

Truly great movies are the ones you can love on a surface level as a child, and then appreciate on multiple new levels as an adult.

Love this movie so much. And missed Ra even more in the show. As I've gotten older, my appreciation for Ra has grown immensely. 10, 000 years he kept the Goa'uld System Lords on a balanced level, warring with one another, but none ever really advancing over their peers and actually posing a threat to him.

Then Earth dials out, blows him up by accident and the entire galactic empire that he had ruled came tumbling down in less than a decade. I really REALLY want an AU where he survives. Earth would be so dead, but man he was such a captivating presence and his deeds in the mythology make him truly incredible in ways none of the other Goa'uld ever came close to. Even Anubis.

0:39 - 1:06 was beautiful! It gave me shivers. Jaye Davidson did an incredible job as RA and no one else could of done a better job. Its crazy how he didn't go on to make more movies because he was a natural.

Kid's a good actor (I know, he's grown up now). Perfectly portrays deadly grace and arrogance.
