As a child of the 80s, Sierra Alfa Alfa Bravo is burned into my psych so completely that if Saab was still around today I would buy whatever they where offering regardless of model or price, well done Saab marketing for playing the long game, shame the accountants let you down.

To fix the downhill Twostroke lubrication problem, Saab made cars with freewheels that made the cars roll freely downhill. The engine sat on idle when rolling and there was no engine break. When the Saab 96 went from twostroke to fourstroke, the freewheel followed over to the fourstroke without any functional reason. I own a Saab 96 -72 (4stroke) with freewheel, and I really like it

been looking for this for a while. My dad had a 2007 Saab 9-5 so ive always had a soft spot for them. I like his BMW that he has now, but the Saab was cool. It was different, but not in a bad way. It was as good as a BMW of the time.

2 strokes get lubricated as long as the engine is running not only when throttle is applied

Not sure why they criticized the 900. That was probably their best car and it was truly amazing

I can’t remember the last time I saw a Saab on the road 🤔🚗🛣️

The thing with 2-stroke engine going downhill is that it idles and you don't need to brake and keep throttle at the same time. It's stupid to show it like that.

With all due respect to Top Gear but I would say that the sequence with the Saab 92 and the description about the supposed lubrication problem is not entirely truthful. As the case with all Saab two-strokes, as well as V4 and early Saab 99 models, the Saab 92 was equipped with free wheels in order to prevent situations like the one when the car is driving down a hill. Then you just let go of the gas pedal and the car continues to roll without engine brake. However, if the free wheel was disengaged or malfunctioned, you had to drive similar to how it is done in the programme. So partly true, yes, but dramatised in a very exaggerated way.

The sonett is beautiful and nobody will change my mind on that

The thing that bothers me is that they purpously exclude the fact that Saab from the beginning solved the lubrication problem by fitting all two stroke models with a so called "free wheeling device" that disengaged the gearbox from the engine thus removing engine breaking and thus lack of lubrication was no longer a problem. A shame in an otherwise beautiful documentary by top gear.

James: when we heard the news that SAAB had closed down, Jeremy and I were actually very sad. Although... we weren't actually sure why.
