The bottom row left to right is Warrant officer 2 (technical or quartermaster type) the middle is company Sgt major (also WO2) and the right is Warrant officer class 1 which are Regimental Sgt major ( garrison Sgt major would have the same badge)

Also staff sergeant is also colour Sgt if in an infantry regiment or Royal Marines

That's because the British Army is built around the Regiment. America's is built around the Corps, which is AT LEAST two divisions (four Regiments), and two Corps make up an Army. The U.S. has SEVERAL Armies.

Always found it easy to understand. I dealt with the Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery, army air corps and a few others when I was MOD staff, always “so and so isn’t a private he’s a and so on. When I first started it took some getting used to but it was always politely corrected or just ignored, the squaddies always looked out for you if you make sure you work hard for them.

i like it tbh. It’s a reminder that the institution is old, very very old. Older than even the United Kingdom itself. Some traditions are better than others, though😊

I have my views on the army as an organisation, more so its role in the society we live in today and how it’s used by the governments of our time, but whatever I think of the Army itself, it has some of the best men and women in the country. Truly heartwarming the way everyone looks out for each other.

Some of the worst, too, though. And s few of the stupidest…

In Malaysia, even though we're Commonwealth, we do have Regimental Sergeant Major of Army which the most senior among Warrant Officer. Same as US military Sergeant Major of Army and USMC E-9

Same as the South African army. At least when I was serving back in the late 80s. We used to refer to staff sergeants as " the sergeant with a volume control"

And then the QDG just had to mess around a little. Two chevrons for LCpl, two chevrons with a crown for corporal...

In my regiment is 2 stripes for both Lance Corporal and Corporal. The Corporal wears a cypher on his arm in no 2 dress and Spurs for mess dress. Staff sergeants are called sergeant major. The Queens Royal Hussars

Operative word is "appears" in that sentence. It appears simple but if there's anything I learned from being a dual citizen of the US and UK it's that *nothing* is ever as simple as you think it should be in either of these nations.

Not forgetting the highest non-commissioned rank in the British Army ( only in the Royal Logistic Corp /RAOC), and that is the rank of Conductor. And no, not the sort that directs bands or orchestra.

US: Sergeant. Sergeant Major. Master Sergeant. Sergeant Prime. Sergeant Sergeant. General Sergeant. Sergeant General. Glorious Sergeant. Glorious Master Super Sergeant. Freedom Sergeant.

UK: Sergeant

Think you need to show people the ranks of the household cavalry to really mess their brains up

As a US soldier who's been down this rabbit hole, NO these are in all honesty in my opinion so much worse. With the US ones you know basically how important someone is based on their rank, you know how many people they're in charge of, what level of decision making theyre at, how to address them, etc.

So WO2 carries two different insignia, RQMS {regimental quartermaster Sergeant} which has a laruel and wreath as its insignia and then CSM {company sergeant Major} which has a large crown as its insignia. both carry the rank of W02 and then W01 is RSM. GSM {garrison sergeant major} is 4 chevrons and a large WO1 crest in the middle

You’re well off with this, considering different regiments can have different variations of these.

Anyone who's been in the UK armed forces have different names for the ranks. None of which can be repeated for the gentle folk of Youtubeland.

Why have you not mentioned Warrant Officer class three? My partners granddad was a warrant officer class three died at Dunkirk.. last seen heading into the smoke for another go at the Germans while his troops dropped back.
