My old school pal, was 1 of 12 children, he was brought up in a poor neighborhood in inner city Liverpool, he left secondary school With no certification and got a job as a butcher he joined the army at 18 yrs of age in what was then known as the Catering Corps he was a butchers instructor he was made up to a sergeant over the years he was steadily promoted, he ended up as a Lt Colonel commanding officer of the largest supply base in Germany he also was awarded an MBE just an ordinary lad from a poor background .not a single word was written about him by the local or national press when he died at 69 yrs of age 10 yrs ago .his was a truly remarkable achievement .

Trivia. Sir William Robertson is the only person to have held every rank in the British army. Enlisting as a trooper( private) in November 1877, his final promotion to Field Marshal was in March 1920.

I'm a veteran in The United States Air Force. The impression I get of your rank structure is that it's very streamlined and efficient.

As a former Captain in the Army, I was taught a valuable lesson as I was coming up the ranks. My rank will never be higher than my wife's appointed position.

Firstly, fantastic video. Here's a few things which need to be aired here. History. The army ranks of today date back to 1900, when HIM Queen Victoria suggested the army simplify there rank structure, especially amongst the officer class.
Amongst the NCO ranks very little changed in the infantry regiments. But, in the household division they made the household ranks more visible and impressive. For example. The rank of L/Cpl was given an extra stripe, and became Corporal. Full Corporal became Lance Sergeant (3 white stripes). Sergeant became 3 Gold stripes. I am not an expert of the ranks above that. So maybe the rank structure of the household/Cavalry might be worth doing in the future.
Officers. The first officer rank used to be Ensign. Which was a white line on the shoulder. That rank was replaced with 2nd Lieutenant. All ranks above that got an extra pip/star up to the rank of Brigadier General.
Brigadier General, was an official General rank before the 1900 review. They simply added the third star to the rank, and removed General, to make the rank Brigadier. They are senior field officers, and allow no longer a general. They do have a one star flag on their vehicle's.
Major general used to be Sergeant Major general. They kept the shoulder display, but removed the Sergeant from the rank.
Lt General was Lt Colonel General. As before, they kept the shoulder display, and removed the Colonel from the rank.
General hasn't been changed. This rank is the highest rank as officer can reach in peace time. As explained by the jobs they do, that have already been mentioned.
Field Marshal, as mentioned today is an honoury rank. It is also a war rank. A field marshal is the senior general in a group of generals. An example, in WW2 when General Eisenhower was in command of Operation Neptune. General Montgomery (who had been a field marshal), in the desert. Was second in command for Operation Overlord. The rank also has a gun salute of 19 guns. As was done when the unknown warrior was placed in Westminster Abbey.
As l mentioned earlier, the rank of ensign was removed from active service. But, is still an honoury rank used today the signify the officer/officers (if both are on parade), of the officer responsible for the Regimental Colour/Colours at the trooping the colour parade, or any regimental parade where the colours are on display. It's classed as a 'Regimental Duty', normally given to the lower officer ranks.
In conclusion. If by chance you visit any museum and you see an former commanding officer. If they've got a crown, that's pre 1900. A crown & star, that's 1900 onwards. One hopes that this is helpful.
Once again. Great video. Good work

Veteran of the South African Army here. Rank structure was exactly the same. The insignia was a little different though. Officers used stars instead of pips( Although we often referred to one-pip and two-pip lieutenants.) Senior officers used a castle instead of the crown. Some minor changes were made after '94 and the castle was replaced by a protea flower viewed from the top (at least to my untrained eye that's what it looks like)

Nice to see you remembered Conductors. Very rare rank, but senior to every soldier who's not an Officer.

Have you considered doing one on the comparison of NATO ranks ? One for Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force since NATO distinguishes. Enlisted/NCO for each and Officer for each. Note also that the US Coast Guard is a military service and it's structure and insignia is almost identical to the US Navy. These are very nice videos 👍

My goodness! It is hard to get promoted in the British Army. $ingapore used to have similar rank structure in the past. Now it has full of funny ranks that I cannot even remember, like 3rd Sgt and 1st Sgt copied from the Yankees. Senior WO and senior Col. Not forgetting the Military Expert ranks. ME1 to ME7.
My friend, a former Cpt was changed into ME4.
During my time, I became a Cpl in 10 months after gone through and passed 4 courses. If I had continued, I would be a Sgt at the end of 24 months.
That is why I always have great admiration and respect for the British Officers and NCOs.
