I am Japanese and I can 100% guarantee that she was crying because she didn’t understand why they detained her because she was ashamed of being there and couldn’t communicate because of the language barrier.

I can only see a westerner throwing a tantrum if they are not being understood. Get her an interpreter, it basic human decency.

She can't speak your language, girl! You scared the shit out her.

the fact that she keeps talking to her in English even though she know she doesn't understand her is ridiculous.

Here's a clue get an interpreter that can speak in her own language that's how you talk to people and not being overbearing police officer threatening her with all this crap that she does not understand!!!

It kinda seems like this poor girl is crying because she doesn't have a mastery of English and an officer with authority is speaking to her in an accusatory scary way in a language that she doesn't understand. I haven't seen the whole episode so correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the woman was having a normal human reaction!

Seems like she was ALMOST taken advantage of by the border security 😂

Japanese here. Can confirm this is most likely confusion, frustration and culture shock. Border agents in North America are scary and on a constant power trip. We aren’t used to people talking to us like this, especially in a foreign language and for no reason. This “girl” is a grown woman and the agent only belittled and traumatized her 😢

Leaving with more money than you came with seems like her taking advantage of someone lol.

Raising your voice and waving your hands around isn't going to overcome a language barrier. It just stressed this girl out even further. I'd cry if an officer was almost shouting at me in a language I didn't understand.

Japan has the world’s highest rate of confessions to crimes following arrest, not based on actual convictions. In Japanese culture there is a high degree of shame associated with being merely questioned (or even slightly accused) - that’s what makes this encounter feel so reprehensible.

I went to a Colombia at age 22, I arrived with my boyfriend but left by myself (he stayed behind). When I got to security, they started questioning me like crazy. “Why were you here for only 4 days?” “Why are you leaving alone?” They didn’t care that I had cats at home that I needed to get back to who couldn’t be alone much longer, and that I was leaving solo because my boyfriend was going to continue touring South America. No, instead they assumed I was smuggling cocaine.
I was taken to a room, stripped and searched, and had my bags completely dissected. I was finger printed, though I was innocent, then sent on my way.

When I arrived back in the USA, I was searched again.

This was literally only because I was a 22 year old girl who was in the country for 4 days and left solo. All major red flags, in TSA’s eyes. I don’t blame them for playing it safe, but at the same time, I felt extremely violated. It makes me wonder how often these things happen, though. Probably ALL. THE. TIME.
But this is just silly. This officer is essentially like “We found nothing, but I know she has something. I don’t even think she knows she’s guilty, but I know she is.” That’s exactly how I felt like I was being treated, too.

That security guard just made sure that she’s never coming back to the US again. If she was really concerned she would have found a Japanese interpreter. She didn’t. She just kept her voice raised, which in Japan is a sign of aggression, scared the poor girl to death. I hope she or her family contact the American embassy or the Japanese state department to let them know how badly she was treated

“You’re done now.” Aka “we fucked up and we’d like you to leave before you figure that out.”

She's a grown ass woman, if she says she's fine and didn't obviously break any laws, leave her the hell alone.

She's crying because she doesn't know why you have to stop her. She's scared

That's disgusting how they infantalize grown ass women and create a non sense scenario and assign blame to the evil man, just to feel like a hero. You caused her to cry, you're horrible.

I was treated the same way by an immigration officer, a white male in his 50s, at DTW last month. I may be at fault for not speaking perfect English, but he was very overbearing and every time I said something, he and another immigration officer beside me made eye contact and laughed at each other, which made me very sad.
I can understand a little English, so I could understand that he was laughing at me and talking like a fool, but I was too scared to talk back to him. I was allowed to call my boyfriend, who proved that everything I was saying was true and I was able to enter the country safely, but it was a very humiliating hour!

That traumatic and experience in itself, was traumatizing. You were the harassment, and she just wanted to get away from you as fast as she could and I’m glad that she was able to. This is exactly how I feel every time I fly to Florida harassment, harassment, harassment, for no darn reason.
