Thank you for this, I never fully understood how or what to build, since I never fully got into league. I’m more of a casual ARAM player and would always just go with whatever face check would tell me to. But now I know what to build for the enemy team comp.

oh damn, feels kinda nice knowing that this is what I already did, except I go shadowflame b4 stormsurge and liandry b4 horizon, gonna try his way though.
Though I almost always go tank shredder if defensive boots feel like a must:
- syndra + ashe + leona, mercs for tenacity and syndra one shot
- darius + yi + yone + adc, tabi's make you a legitimate bruiser at 1 item
Upside with this is that I can go 5 dmg items like:
blackfire, liandry, horizon, shadowflame (for passive, though magic pen is still nice) and dcap.

never really thought about slotting in horizon when doing the pen build. i usually put seraphs because the people you want to burst can also burst you. i only go for horizon when the reveal is needed (shaco, k6, viego etc.)

So basically TLDR
-Full Pen build if they do not have any frontliners or just squishy champions.
-Tank Shredder if they have frontline champions or just defenses you have to go through.

But lets be honest the enemy can just build MR to avoid taking true damage from full pen but however this also sets them behind in farm/gold as well but this also depends on the team comp as well. 1-2 AP and the rest AD then it kinda becomes iffy.

Also reminder please dont go flat pen into tanky team comps theyll just laugh at you. You build Sorcerer Shoes, enemy spends 400g for a +20 Magic Resist item = you wasted 1100 gold and don't break even.

i like to think this way while i play gragas too. 2 builds are either Seraphs > Cosmic Drive > Lich > then pivot into either Raba/Crypt or tanky like Abyssal/Frozen heart. other than that i go full AP with Ludens, Storm, and Shadowflame. i always run Phase rush and only my secondary runes change depending on build.

This is what makes League different compared to other MOBA games, you need to counter item vs certain enemies comp.
E.g. When opponent building towards more tanky stat ( jax with scaling stat after using ult ), it counters well against normal burst build.

The funniest thing is this exact analysis can fit into almost any mage’s build. Syndra, Lux, Ori etc can more or less follow the exact same logic, you either build for 1shots or build for sustained dps. And then if your champion wants Malignance, that can still fit into either build, it has a ton of cdr for dps builds and flat mr shred for pen builds.

So weird how differently you have to think about this in aram. If you build liandrys on any champ in aram you kinda have to build it first no matter how mana hungry you are or you're just not optimizing your damage, not nearly. This is because the combat is so constant.

This is kinda of my thinking process when I play neeko, when I am support I think, do we have too much Magic Damage? Then I need to run a more Utility set, whit Protobelt+Malignance+Imperial Mandate or Shurelya or Redemption, Criptobloom if they have MR, Morellomicon depending if the opposing team has heal. If I'm going against a tank support or a tanky comp, I go Liandry+BFC+Protobelt, Abyssal Mask or Criptobloom if they have too much MR. Against a squishy comp I go full magic pen with Protobelt or Criptobloom. Against assassins or burst damage I go Zhonyas and Banshees (only if they have engage and burst mages)
