Grow Grocery Store Ginger

I have tried growing ginger from a few different sources over the years, including organic store bought ginger or fancy rhizome starts from seed supplies. In the end you basically get the same plant and while conventional roots aren’t ideal as an organic grower it does save you a lot of money. When I plant them into their final space they will be grown fully organically through and through. I will be sure to keep at least 1 plant in the ground/container to overwinter so that next year I can propagate my own roots! When I saw these conventional rhizomes at the store with growth points I decided I had to get my ginger ball rolling.

When you are looking for ginger to plant you don’t necessarily have to get ones that already have growth spurs/eyes forming, they just ensure that you will have a greater chance of success. If you start with a root that has no evidence of growth give it an overnight soak before planting to give it a boost. If it is organic don’t worry about growth inhibitors as they are only applied to conventional roots. As for removing the growth inhibitor a simple soak does seem to remove it completely! When planting you want to use a soil that retains moisture well but don’t let it get soggy! Remember that ginger is a tropical plant so it needs to be kept warm and humid in the cool spring months in order to properly grow. After 2-6 weeks you should begin to see growth popping out from the soil and then depending on your climate you may be able to plant them outside or you can continue to keep them protected indoors.

I'm glad you clarified that whole "organic" issue; I usually get root starts (garlic, ginger, taro) from ethnic groceries, and no one bothers to spray growth inhibitors on them.

Hey Jacques! I grow Turmeric and Galangal in clay soil with compost laid over the top, and Ginger is on my to plant list. Thanks for the inspiration. Cheers!

I was surprised to find some (not organic) ginger in the back of one of our cupboards today, sprouting like its life depended on it! Guess I'm growing ginger this year! 😄

I got hit with a batch of pyralid contaminated compost. I contained it all in 3 30gal fabric pots, and since pyralids don't effect grasses, I threw some grocery store ginger in it. Ended up harvesting almost 4lbs of ginger before the season was over. It's in the freezer now and I use a little every day in smoothies. Ginger apple beet is a fantastic combination, by the way.

That explains why that ginger I planted months ago is just now poking up a leaf.
I actually forgot about it and was using soil from the pot to pot starting pots.

But when the ginger sprouts it‘s awesome how fast it grows

Ginger flowers and leaves are also edible although milder. Surplus ginger can be thinly sliced and dried in a dehydrator then powdered in a herb grinder.

Well.. As an Indonesian, ginger (specially red ginger) just grow up wildly here.. You can harvest them how much you want. Here in Indonesia they are mostly can be found just near river, near lake, also near your septic tank (disgusting but its the truth🗿). And mostly at Java (huge grew here). I love drinking red ginger tea ❤

I watch someone else on YouTube growing Ginger, anywhere they broke pieces apart they let it sit out and dry out the broken sections said that they had sealed up from getting any disease or drawing pets

QUESTION: I planned on growing my ginger in a long window box planter. Will it grow well ? How far apart should I space it.?

I have done this, it's cool. Also technically that ginger is a rhizome not a root. It's called root bc language is confusing. The ginger's "body" will grow roots

Grow indoors to stop garden pests from eating the shoots. 😊
