Pocahontas lived only 21 years, but her impact was extraordinary. The Powhatan chief’s daughter befriended colonists, endured kidnapping, crossed oceans, and became an exotic "princess"—only to die mysteriously. This is the story of Pocahontas, a Native American icon.

Only Disney could turn history like this into a sappy, saccharine, love story.

There’s an absolutely fantastic book about her, written by Paula Gunn Allen.

She will always be remembered as an American icon well-deserving of that title

She was SA and forced to marry a settler —-nobody even knew who her child’s father was.

I doubt that "John Smith" was his real name. Pocahantas wasn't her Algonquin name, that was given to her from the English settlers because it sounded like a name from her nation. Her birth name was Matoaka. After her baptism, her name was changed to Rebecca Smith (Lady Rebecca, because her husband was a member of nobility).

Also, the chief named after the name of the nation? That seems to be inaccurate to me. Chief Powhatan is probably more accurately "Chief of the Powhatan, " so Powhatan probably isn't a personal name but the name of a nation.

The girl in your thumbnail looks more like a Pacific Islander than a Native American.

I don't remember any mention of Pocahontas having a sister or a previous husband in the college course I took on American Colonial History, or in Benjamin Woolley's book Savage Kingdom.

I wouldn't have been surprised if she was poisoned imagine this for a minute her husband sees how she reacts to her old teacher and friend and you can imagine what he's thinking okay yeah the man is old but it wasn't uncommon in those days for a much much older man one who could be her father even her grandfather to have a young woman as his whatever and he was probably thinking that based on some of the stories that have no doubt come back to him that those two must have been more than just teacher and and student or friends if you will my guess is that he did not forces that be including himself did not want her to go back to her old lands because the very fact is that has she gone back there with her son there was a possibility that her son might have gone native and he would have lost his son also she might because of the way she spoke to John Smith there was a very high probability she might turn against the British altogether and go back to her own which would start the war up again there is a reason her sister may have been correct in assuming that she was bumped off.

I don't know where you are getting your information but I saw Pocahontas on MSNBC recently and she's at least in her late 70s
