"This show is more mature audiences"

*Proceeds to give a sesame street explanation on what trans gender is*

"Is that your sister?"
"That's me."
"What?"
"I've grown a lot since then >chuckle<."
And then move on.

"Mom! I want representation!"

"I'm transgender."
"I don't know that word."
"Well, let me feed you a textbook explanation and clumsily tie it into the worldbuilding so the setting doesn't fall apart from thinking too hard"

It's so fucken surreal to see a guy from a generic fantasy pseudo-medieval world casually say '"transgender" like it would just so happen to have a modern day word for that.

"I take a potion once a month to keep the spell active." Jesus Christ, people this is FANTASY. You could just make it a permanent effect with no hassle. Did you really need to make a magical allegory for hormone treatments?

"You were a girl?"
"Not exactly. You could say I went through a lot of changes over the years before truly becoming myself. It wasn't always easy but your mother was with me through every step along the way."
"*sigh* I'd give anything to know where she is right now."
"Me too, kid. Me too."

Fixed your shit

"You were a girl?"
"*Chuckles* Well, not exactly."
Literally could have cut down this scene by 30 seconds.

Imagine self-inserting yourself into a play to only tell your audience that you indirectly take testosterone once a month.

I just watched the “fan” made version of this scene, it had better visuals, better explanation, more emotion, better flowing dialogue, basically better everything in a technical sense. I just can’t believe how much worse the official version is, you would think that a team that prides themselves so much on being progressive that they only talked about how diverse their team is in the first look(they really hired only white women) would at least be able to write a decent trans character, but I’ve seen better trans representation in 90s movies and I’m convinced that I could write a better character in a 10 minute timeframe

It is hilarious that literally nobody likes this scene regardless of where they fall on the political/social spectrum.

They could’ve just shortened it to something like “Wait, that’s you?” “Magic does wonders, doesn’t it?” And just leave it like that.

I'm transgender, and I want representation as much as the next, but I actually had to take a cringe break when they said "take a potion every month"

friendly reminder that the creators of this show believe it is meant for *mature audiences*

I felt like a child the way it explains transgenderism to me.

Ideally:
"Is that your sister?"
"Ah no, that's me."
"You're a girl?"
"Not anymore, new magic has come a long way since then, hasn't it?"
"Oh, you're right!.. hmmm ohh I'd give anything to know where mom is.."

keeps it brief, lore-compliant, and relates to the protagonist girl's current interest so that her quickness to understand is supported by the "enthusiastic about magic" facet of her character all the while conveying representation in a way that isn't patronizing.
