ANOTHER EM DRIVE? NASA engineer's new Helical Engine proposal has BIG GOALS

#nasa #spacetravel #spaceship

A NASA engineer is touting his designs for an ion engine that could reach 99% the speed of light.

And today we're going to be covering what very likely could be another EM DRIVE fiasco.

I say we go back to the orion drive. Now thats a thruster.

For some reason people don't know about the 1 realistic method for interstellar travel. If a ship travels at a constant 1 g acceleration rate it would get to Alpha Centauri in just 3.6 ship/7.3 Earth years (and that includes turning the ship around halfway to decelerate) and it would have gravity the whole way. The ship would achieve about .95% light speed after about 1 year. A 10 ton ship would need a mere 10 tons of continuous thrust.
All that is needed for this is a fission rocket that can put out thrust for long periods and does not consume hydrogen or xenon (you can't bring 500 tons of that with you).
Uranium and plutonium are jittery atoms that are on the verge of fissioning all by themselves, there should be a way to get them to fission in a linear fashion with the use of an electrical current.
Imagine positively charged uranium or plutonium atoms heading towards negatively charged uranium or plutonium atoms. Imagine a laser hitting a very thin sheet of weapons grade uranium. If either of these cause fission that could be the basis for a true fission rocket.
With the constant 1 g acceleration method a ship can span the entire diameter of our galaxy in 24 ship/113, 000 Earth years. Systems with stars similar to our sun can be reached in under 10 years.

I think technology will catch up eventually but not sure this is the answer

Not to mention the Bussard Ramjet in Larry Niven's works...
