In the last video, we talked about why you should not be a data scientist. If you still think that data science could be the right career path for you then this video is for you! In this video, we're going to flip it around and talk about why being a data scientist is awesome! Which I clearly think it is since I'm here talking to you still as a full time data scientist :)

Why you should not be a data scientist:

Why I work so hard (despite having a 'good' job):

How I would learn to code (if I could start over):

About me

Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

Ah as a fellow data scientist over in Sydney and small YouTuber, completely agree with everything you’ve shared - thanks for another great video Tina!!!

Yo! That indecisive career thing is happening in my life right now. Thanks, Tina for the insights.

Your videos are quite educational and informative. You have really good teaching skills. I won't be surprised if Tina becomes a Stanford prof in a few years from now :)

I am an aspiring doctor, and you're gonna make me switch my career path for real to becoming a data scientist because of how cool you make it seem, lol I am questioning my existence now and whether my choice of medicine is the right one

I’m in grad school now for DS but my background is in philosophy. I’ve been concerned about how that will impact my prospects for internships/careers but I’m happy to have what I’ve seen validated in terms of the flexibility of the role from someone who knows. Thank you! Your videos are all really great.

Thank you so much for these videos! I'm a high school English teacher with a masters degree and 9 years of experience and even by the time I retire, I won't be making as much as an entry level data scientist. I've been looking for a way out of teaching that would fulfill my love of lifelong learning and solving issues and working with numbers. I also love learning languages, and learning to code is basically that!

There's literally no such thing as "entry level" for Data Scientist and Data Analyst job listings. Unless you mean listings that require expert SQL w/3-5 yrs Python exp.

Data scientists’ responsibilities lie at the intersection between business analysis and data engineering, focusing on analytics and data technology.

Thanks! This was very helpful. As someone with a mild case of ADHD, I have had problems with boredom. I am older, but always enjoy learning new things and diving in where others fear to go. I enjoy new problems to solve. Searching for a career change, so I think I will try data science and follow my nose! 🤣 Thanks again!!

It was a very useful video to learn more about this area. I'm always studying something new, just as you, and it's incredible to get into other areas related to the work I do.

The ultimate back up career choice! :). I think the bit about discovering something new is probably the most important for me. If you do another video like this, could you please talk about the social side of working as a data scientist? I mean collaboration and friendships with colleagues

Everything you said in this video resonated with me super hard. 😲 Thank you for sharing! I have always been interested in learning new things, but my problem is how the subject becomes dull once I develop an understanding of it, and then I want to move on to something else. I recently got back into coding and learned about data analysis/science (which has become a new obsession), but part of me is worried that it will get boring. WAS worried. Thanks to you, I'm feeling better about pursuing this new and ever-changing career interest! THANK YOU SO MUCH, TINA! Love your videos!

I am a very indecisive person. I let my parents to decide my education and job. Currently very much want to quit my current job. I have finished Google Data Analytics certification. But I pretty much lacked the portfolio to apply for analytics job. Still not confident with my technical skills too.

I hope you're right that data science is fit for indecisive person like me. On the other hand I wish I can pursue my hobby in music and sport.

Its been a long time since I commented (or had time for youtube, still don't but trying to distract myself from panicking over my Discrete math class), but if I recall, when I last commented I was still working on my associates. I finished that right as covid hit, took a year off, and am now a Junior studying Data Science. Right now in Statistics (easy A so far), some nonsense Liberal Arts class (forced to take it, has nothing to do with D.S.), Discrete (halp.) and intro to java (Most fun I've ever had in school). Your videos are what inspired me to pursue this major/career path, Thank You so Much! Its the perfect fit for me, a healthy mix of computer programming and math, with a dash of whatever I'm interested in for fun (physics, engineering, stats/combinatorics, even political theory and philosophy (thought that might be a bit of a stretch as far as how it relates to D.S., i think i can make it work)). Again, Thank You for introducing me to this wonder field!!!

What worries me about the Data Scientist role is that there isn't that much entrepreneurial potential. Software engineers can build things from nothing, Electricians can start their own business, but what can a Data Scientist do other than work for an employer?

You're such good cheer to watch...taking away anxiety of the unknown and adding such positive vibes to people like myself😊😊😊
