In this video, we’re going to talk about blood sugar crashes that typically occur in the afternoon. What causes them and how can you prevent them?

Between 3:30 and 4:30 in the afternoon, some people experience a blood sugar crash. This can cause you to feel tired, irritable, and can even cause poor vision. Other common signs of a blood sugar crash are salty cravings around 8:00 p.m. and chocolate or sweet cravings around 11:30 a.m.

Eating or snacking during a blood sugar crash can make you feel better temporarily, but actually makes things worse over time.

A blood sugar crash occurs because you’re dependent on sugar for fuel. This means that your blood sugar is constantly going up and down throughout the day. When you eat, you trigger insulin which lowers your blood sugar. Eating raises your blood sugar, but then it’s lowered once again by insulin.

Over time, this develops into insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can cause many health issues including inflammation, belly fat, and metabolic syndrome. Understanding that the crashes you’re experiencing are a blood sugar problem is the first step in stopping your blood sugar crashes.

Try these tips to stop blood sugar crashes for good:
1. Increase your fat intake during meals to go longer in between meals without feeling hungry.
2. Make sure you’re eating a moderate amount of protein. If you aren’t eating enough, it could negatively affect your blood sugar.
3. Ensure that you’re eating plenty of greens. The minerals in vegetables help to stabilize the blood sugar.
4. Consume apple cider vinegar.
5. Look out for hidden carbs.
6. Do keto and intermittent fasting.

I used to crash every day around 2pm and would turn to coffee to get me through. Since changing my diet and cutting things out, I no longer crash and have energy all day long. It's amazing what just a few little tweaks can do.

You and dr. Fung have changed my life when it comes to insulin resistance. I did not know that was a real thing but you guys have exposed us to this and now I have been losing weight like crazy and it's not even hard anymore. I intermittent fast on the regular and today I am 1 hour away from completing my 36-hour fast. Thank you so much for this information.

Putting some salt on my tongue or taking a sip of apple cider vinegar/lemon juice that has some potassium cloride substitute salt water helps me when I get tempted between meals.

I learn something new with each of your videos. Thank you so much for making them on a daily basis.

I would love if you could do a video on why many people who do keto long term experience their skin tags naturally falling off and one where how your eyesight improves on keto. I'm on a keto forum where either or both of these occurrences have happened to a great many people. But know one knows why exactly; they only speculate. It would be great if you knew and could make a video/videos explaining these phenomenons.

This used to happen to me all the time. About once a week I would fall asleep watching TV, I couldn't stay awake. Since going full keto this never happens.

I think we all had these. Since I am on Keto and IF. I do not have these any more. It is such a freedom not having them.

I do everything you said and I still have horrible crashes EVERY afternoon. I sleep well, have less than 50 carbs a day, eat fats like nuts, avocado, cheese, olive oil and lots of greens (4 cups of spinach smoothie with my two meals a day).

Do you have any Keto apps recommendations? Those that are for iPhone or android and preferably free?
I need a better easier way to keep track of what I'm eating and what I need to eat to read my daily goal

Protein keeps your glucose levels stable during fasts because of gluconeogenesis (creation of glucose from amino acids, in the liver). This is key to controling hunger. You can be sure that if you feel hungry all the time during a fast, you´re not eating enough protein.
