1984 is a dystopian novel by George Orwell that takes place in a post-nuclear war world in the year 1984. The main character, Winston Smith, lives in the Superstate of Oceania, which is controlled by the oppressive government known as Big Brother. Winston is a member of the Outer Party and works in the Ministry of Truth, where he is responsible for rewriting history to suit the government's agenda. He begins a forbidden love affair with a woman named Julia and together, they resist Big Brother and attempt to join the underground rebel movement known as The Brotherhood. They are eventually caught by Big Brother's Thought Police and subjected to torture and brainwashing in an effort to make them conform to the government's ideals. Winston eventually succumbs to the pressure, while Julia remains defiant. In the end, Winston is forced to accept Big Brother as his only hope of salvation.
