They don't live underground only. The Australian leaf cutter ants live underground to avoid the heat but some Leaf cutter ants living in the rainforests live on the trees to avoid flooding and excessive moisture.

We stopped off on the coach for a rest .
And I saw them carting leaves back and forth in and out of the hole in the ground I was transfixed watching them
