Micromanagement breeds complacency, I experienced this at my last job; which I quit for just this reason. I worked in a warehouse. The procedures are outdated and trying to get them to change only meets with resistance. On our daily schedule, each task has a time limit. This includes sweeping the aisle for debris, which is ten minutes. This was brought up in a meeting that we were taking to long. When I started working there she said I was going to slow and took the broom to demonstrate how to do it. Never saw someone powerwalk and sweep at the same time. In the end this had an impact on the morale and initiaitve. The lectures due to making a mistake that she caught was counter productive. The amazing part of this is when she was gone, the stress was gone and the work atmosphere improved. The lead person focused on the tasks and not the specific particulars. Working as a team paid off compared to walking on eggshells.

This is a pretty basic, yet simplistic, description of the Micro manager. All managers should want results, regardless of what steps they take to achieve them. Some just have a very cutthroat and antagonistic method of doing so.

The criticism you recieve from a manager is positive, where a postitive result is achieved. A micromanagers' criticism, in my experience is negative, derogatory and downright rude.

So true. I've been guilty of micromanaging myself, and I've been micromanaged, and your comments are so true...

Thanks great video. watching i thought to my self "this is 101" then i thought how often do i incorporate the basics into my management style. Managers in every industry should revisit the basics.

I already found a company and already spent two weeks. I received a compliment from my supervisor after finishing my first task quickly. That supervisor is quite opposite to my former manager. Although my past experiences from my former manager still traumatize me, He and his other colleagues there are kind so it helps me to cope with it. And, the workload is related to my course.

my boss micro manages, and it drives us crazy! he's always showing up where your working and talks about personal things going on in his life. I don't want to hear it. he's not interested what's going on with you unless you need time off. I could go on for a while about the way he manages!

Wow man this really hits home, my manager is insecure and the damaged he has done to our environment is very stressful

everything mentioned screams about my manager. and about the "now" and "when" I complained once to my manager about this and she kinda change it a bit. she makes a to do list for me and give the deadline of every task for a week. but it didn't help much bcs the deadline is still very short and I don't see the urgency of those deadlines, also she still order me to do this and that in between

I can't tell you how many times I've stories like that. It's really unfortunate because micro-managers drive away the most talented people with their behavior.

Hi, Dave. I am starting a new job in a couple weeks as a manager. It will be my first forray into this new territory. I happened upon this video in search of tips and I must say it was very clear and understandable. Do you have any other you can share that can give me additional advice? I'm extremely detail-oriented and have been known by peers to be somewhat condescending for which I don't want to surface in my new job.

I really still confused, this term that i recently knew, Micro-management, in my workplace which my client wants me to apply, I still conflict that this style is not the best option to proceed works and elevate team collaboration, so please when should i use this style and for how long?

I like this video.  I wish every person in the position of management would have to go through a course on how to be a manager.  Some shouldn't be in management just because they know the business.  They may have too much of a control personality.  Or not get that there are more then one way of doing something and if you get the same result it doesn't make it wrong.  Get to know your crew or employees,  lead by example.

Everything you said pertaining to micro managers is what my boss does. I can't believe I have lasted 5 years working for her. Everyone in my department doesn't like her at all.

The micro-managers being describe in this video are exactly what my former manager is. That manager is working for the company when I took my first internship. The worse part was I didn't know anything much regarding the workload and the environment I dealt with. After two weeks, I quit and had to find another company.
