Me too. I cry every time anybody dies in any film. With LOTR and the Hobbit - it's too much to bear. Too many people die. Gandalf, Boromir, Haldir, Thorin, Fili, Kili, and more. But that's the price you pay for having watched/read/listened to an epic.

To me, back in 2001, this was the most heartbreaking moment in movie history. I had no idea about Gandalf's future return, so to me this was like a father/grandfather figure's death. This was also before the easy access of spoilers as the internet had not fully matured yet as far as search engines go.. not to mention social media being just about what you got from messenger services and forums. So to avoid spoilers, willingly or otherwise, was easy. Even more so by the fact that nerds and geeks were in very short supply in my town, so probably most of us had no idea.

I still feel a longing and aching for Gandalf the Grey.. as he died there. The old, wise and pleasant old man. When he was reborn, he's not the same.. yet it is indeed him of course. He has a slight personality change and likely would not engage in the same joys he did as Gandalf the Grey. Despite his rebirth I do miss Gandalf the Grey.

Not having read the books, I went into the movie thinking it would be a template action fantasy. Less important characters getting picked off till only Frodo was left to destroy the ring. When Gandalf was the first to die, i was in complete shock.

I hadn't read the books before I saw this movie and legitimately believed Gandalf was dead and gone, never to return and it hit me so hard. Then Boromir died and the fellowship broke up and just made for such a bittersweet ending. I could not ever feel the same anticipation for a movie as I did for The Two Towers and ROTK.
