From football managers to army generals, school teachers to heads of state, maintaining reputation and respect from those you command is crucial. With fear and love such polar opposites, leaders have a choice to make. Which would you choose?

Granted the other speakers are students; this was the segment that decided the debate in my opinion. I was on the side of fear as I interpret fear as the feeling that tells us not to do something or not to something-- for fear of the consequences. Love, when expressed as philia as opposed to fear as expressed by phobia, is the safer feeling onwhich to construct a society.

Love for the many. Fear for the few.
Love as a Leader. Fear as a Boss.

The philosopher king is no guarantee that will rule with both fear and love; Nor that those attributes will be properly balanced.
The visionary king who is grounded appears a better choice. 60% fear 40% love (filia).
Feared by their colleagues (40/60), loved by their subjects/followers (30/40).

Have the vision to justify "this is why we do things", "this is where we go", "I struggle with you", and the fear as responsibility and order, to keep things running smoothly.
To say "Julian you are in charge of order in the society, but if I find out you 'fix' the wrong people, or traffic them, or enslave them for no reason, by mistake etc prepare to face the consequences" Then do it.
To say "Elizabeth you are allowed to run this research program with a small percentage for 'collateral', if you deliver a stable version of what is expected. We have Martin and Ray on the other teams; the race is on, but play fair or else..." Then do it.

Corruption needs fear and that is the difficult part. Can you trust those who work with/for you? Who makes the rules?

And have the philosopher on the side for advice. Ask them, "I have David match these pieces to this puzzle. If the pieces fit in the puzzle nicely, it doesn't mean they should be there, even if I decide what the picture of this puzzle is...Right?"

Perhaps a philosopher is a historian, or a visionary, among other things...
Perhaps Utilitarian Socialism is worth a try...
