You can buy a great bike used for that

This is so true even in Canada. I bought a $400 bike used in pretty good shape and was progressed way beyond the bike within 6 months. So I picked up a $1300 29er hard tail and it is so much more capable I know itll handle everything I’m gonna throw at it

Bring back Rich's Dad, love him!

£1500 buys you a damn good anything 2nd hand. Enduro, DH, freeride, bike park, XC full sus, hardtail with serious attitude, even a stitched 720 can be had at that money.

Currently looking across at the bike I built from the frame up that's just taken me the full loop of the wessex ridgeway. Deore and recon so firmly entry level (meaning entry to the sport, not entry to bikes in general), £600 all in.

If you're buying new then this is great guidance. And I always recommend buying new if you're not a great mechanic or don't know any who'll cut you a deal.

Sounds great until you spend 1500 on a hobby you've never done before and may not even like then the resale value is 800.

Something close to 5k € is probably the best, I tried even 12k MTB but onestly the jump from a 1.5/2k to a 5k build is insane compared to a highest one.
